AUSTIN, Texas \u2013 A federal jury in Austin has convicted an Indian national for his role in a wire fraud and money laundering scheme that targeted elderly victims across the United States, federal officials announced Monday.<\/p>\n
Bhavesh Kumar Thakkar, 45, was convicted on two counts related to wire fraud and money laundering, according to U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office Western District of Texas. <\/p>\n
According to court documents, Thakkar was in the U.S. on a spousal visa and participated in the scheme from at least September 2022 through September 2025.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors said Thakkar served as a U.S.-based coordinator for fraud proceeds collected from elderly victims by call center scammers based in India. The proceeds, in cash and gold, were obtained from victims nationwide and then shipped to Los Angeles and New York before being laundered overseas.<\/p>\n
Authorities said Thakkar was directly connected to more than $150 million in fraud proceeds.<\/p>\n
Thakkar was accused of conspiring with co-defendants Rakesh Barot, Dhruv Rajeshbhai Mangukiya and Kishan Rajeshkumar Patel.<\/p>\n
In 2025, Mangukiya and Patel were sentenced to 97 months and 63 months in federal prison.
