Some knew they needed to register, while others came after checking their status and realizing something wasn’t right.

This story continues below.

For Travis County resident Laura Rodea, registering was about making sure her voice is heard in November.

“It’s very important for me to feel like my voice matters and my opinion matters, and I think that voting is the opportunity to express yourself and express what is important to you and why it matters to you,” Rodea said.

But getting registered hasn’t been so simple for everyone this year. Roughly 35,000 voter registration applications submitted through the Texas Department of Public Safety were delayed because of a software issue involving a state vendor.

Other voters have encountered different issues with their registration status.

Travis County resident Aaron McBee said he checked his voter registration three times and found his status in suspense.

“I checked my voter registration three different times, and it was suspended. And I’ve submitted, postmarked countless forms, and it still was not active in the system,” McBee said. “Democracy is very important to me, so I decided to take a pay cut to make sure that my registration was up to date, because I really want to participate in the up-and-coming midterm elections.”

The League of Women Voters is urging Texans to check their registration and understand what their status means.

“Check your registration and just make sure it will say, it can say that you’re eligible, but you also want to make sure that it says that you’re active and not in suspense or suspended,” said Valerie DeBill, director of voter registration and turnout. “Suspense does not mean that you can’t vote, and I want to make this really clear that you can absolutely still vote.”

For people who still need to register, there is still time Monday night.

Volunteers at the Travis County Clerk’s Office at 5501 Airport Blvd. are helping people register until midnight. DeBill said volunteers there can also register eligible voters who live in several counties surrounding Travis County.

The main Travis County Tax Office at 2433 Ridgepoint Drive is also accepting voter registration applications in person until midnight.

Not sure whether you’re registered?

Check your voter registration status here.

Texas does not offer online voter registration.
