But according to locals, there are many things that seem normal in the Alamo City but turn out to be unique to the 210. These include snacks, style choices and celebrations, among other things, that might draw weird looks from people who didn’t grow up here.

1. Here, breakfast tacos are a food group unto themselves. OK, they’re a favorite across Texas, but one that’s almost impossible to find outside the state. Plus, San Antonians would probably argue that our breakfast tacos are superior to those in other major Texas cities. One commenter on the r/sanantonio subreddit said, “I’ve lived in other large Texas cities and they just do NOT do breakfast tacos correctly anywhere else. It’s definitely a regional thing here in/around SA.” Another pointed to our local delicacy, the bean and cheese taco, noting that it isn’t as much of a thing in North Texas as it is in the 210.

2. Puffy tacos also made the list because San Antonio literally invented them. Commenters also noted the city’s affinity for Big Red with barbacoa, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos topped with cheese, carne guisada and anything topped with chamoy. Bonus points if you ask for your beer “dressed.”

3. One way to tell a San Antonio girl (or a Texan girl) is in the room is if you can hear her James Avery charm bracelet jingling 20 yards away. “Everyone I meet who’s a local here is surprised to hear James Avery was not a thing in other states,” one commenter said. Founded in Kerrville (just like H-E-B), the rustic-style jewelry brand has expanded to other states but is still most prominent here in Texas.

4. No other city will go honking for a Spurs playoff win. So during the spring, stay away from Commerce Street or SW Military Drive if you hate traffic, the smell of exhaust, Spurs jerseys and lots of inflatable aliens.

5. On that note, people from other cities might ask you to explain who Tim Duncan is. One Reddit user said, “I was listening to a podcast not too long ago and one of the hosts said she had no idea who Tim Duncan was. I had to pause it and just sit there for a second while I remembered that Tim Duncan is only a San Antonio household name.”

6. Some treat high school as an era of their life they never speak of again after graduation, but in San Antonio, high schools serve as identifiers. Locals often ask which one you went to — and no, it doesn’t mean you peaked at 17. It just means we’re a big city that acts like a small town, and you probably went to school with someone’s cousin’s best friend’s sibling. Also, we’re nosy and like to know where you grew up.

7. Lastly, Battle of Flowers means nothing to people outside San Antonio. “I thought battle of flowers was a national holiday growing up,” one commenter wrote. For that matter, San Antonio’s love of parades needs to be studied.

San Antonio is the sort of place with its own slang and unwritten rules.
