Volunteer Daniel Taylor said, during the duration of the registration push, he helped 113 voters, and he was “pretty happy” about that total. Registration forms had to be postmarked by Oct. 5.

Daisy Ramirez said a friend of hers is among those Taylor registered. She said every vote matters.

“One extra vote, it can change everything,” Ramirez said.

She said registering should be a priority for anyone who turns 18.

But the league says registration is not the only challenge this year. Organizers expect getting voters to the polls to be an even bigger task after Tarrant County commissioners cut 92 polling sites on Election Day.

Taylor said volunteers are spending more time helping voters find where they can cast ballots. He said the group has a list of the remaining voting locations that runs about six pages.

Fort Worth City Councilwoman Deborah Peoples, who represents District 5, has filed a lawsuit against the county seeking to restore polling places, specifically in the 76103 ZIP code.

“We now have no voting location in this entire zip code,” Peoples said.

Janet Mattern, president of the League of Women Voters of Tarrant County, said the group is pursuing a different approach. She said the organization is compiling a list of free rides for people who need transportation to the polls.

“We needed to find a way to get the voters who were most impacted,” Mattern said.

Mattern said participation in elections matters regardless of political preference.

“The only way we can keep our democracy is for everyone to participate regardless of who you vote for,” she said.

Volunteers planned to remain at the campus until 7 p.m. Monday.

The focus is shifting from voter registration to voter education, including how to get to the polls and…

[13
150,152,151
post-457683","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arlington","tag-arlington","tag-arlington-headlines","tag-arlington-news
["GET
