{"id":457727,"date":"2026-10-06T06:30:19","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T06:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/457727\/"},"modified":"2026-10-06T06:30:19","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T06:30:19","slug":"tstc-electrical-program-fills-fast-amid-trade-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/457727\/","title":{"rendered":"TSTC electrical program fills fast amid trade demand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">MARSHALL, Texas (KSLA) &#8211; Enrollment in a new electrical construction program at Texas State Technical College is skyrocketing, with instructors pointing to better pay and job security in the age of AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The one-year program teaches students to wire houses. Normally, graduates would have to wait two years before taking their journeyman wireman\u2019s test \u2014 but not anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIn the end of that one year, the students would be able to take their journeyman wire test,\u201d said Darrell Godfrey, electrical construction instructor at Texas State Technical College. \u201cNormally they would have to wait two years to be able to do that, but we\u2019ve made a deal with TDLR \u2014 we are following their guidelines \u2014 so we\u2019re able to let them go ahead and test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link | text-reset d-block h-100 w-100\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ksla.com\/page\/ksla-streaming\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"KSLA\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/CJULBREU3RAOTLOR7JDJACWJXM.jpg\" width=\"980\" height=\"551\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Godfrey has taught electrical construction at TSTC for two years and has worked in the trade for more than 20 years. He says he\u2019s noticing a trend of more people turning to trade jobs right now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI think there\u2019s just a great demand for the trades right now,\u201d Godfrey said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Godfrey points to two reasons behind that demand: pay, and AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cAI cannot replace an electrician, a plumber, or a heat and air guy,\u201d Godfrey said. \u201cThe older guys are retiring out of the field, and we need more and more young guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Dillon Olson, a student studying advanced manufacturing, says that same job security is part of why he got into the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cYou get more hands-on experience, and it\u2019s a lot more absorb, instead of just reading something online and expecting to retain it,\u201d Olson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The electrical construction program is full for now.
