SAN ANTONIO \u2013 President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a rally<\/a> Wednesday evening at Freeman Coliseum, and San Antonio voters are split on what his visit means for a close Texas Senate race<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Supporters said they welcomed the trip.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love President Trump, he\u2019s awesome,\u201d one voter said.<\/p>\n

Another said she was \u201cbummed\u201d to be missing the rally. <\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I think he\u2019s a great president,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Others described Trump as \u201ca terrific speaker and a good motivator\u201d and said, \u201cYou should believe in Trump, he\u2019s done a great job for this country so far.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the supporters KSAT met, Wednesday\u2019s rally is also a chance to build momentum in the Senate race.<\/p>\n

When asked if they think the rally will sway voters in any way, one voter said \u201cabsolutely.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI hope so. Showing face in something you\u2019re dedicated about. Showing up where people care, how can you not support that?\u201d the voter said.<\/p>\n

Others said they are not welcoming his arrival.<\/p>\n

\u201cHearing that news, a lot of people aren\u2019t going to like it. I didn\u2019t really like it,\u201d one said. <\/p>\n

Another said, \u201cI\u2019m not very happy. He\u2019s just not a good guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t really care for Trump. I was shocked to see he\u2019s coming here,\u201d another voter said.<\/p>\n

One voter tied the visit to the state of the race. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think they\u2019re scared. I think that\u2019s why he is coming,\u201d the voter said. \u201cWith Talarico it looks like the projections show we are winning now so that\u2019s why they brought their big guns out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ian Smith, a political science professor at St. Mary\u2019s University, said the visit surprised him and signals Republicans are facing a competitive Senate race in a state they have long dominated.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that we see this tight Senate race between Talarico and Paxton, seeing the president to come in to shore up a candidate from a party that has won every statewide office since the 1990s means Texas is in play suddenly,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n

When asked whether the visit will have any impact in November, Smith said any effect would be limited.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it has any impact it\u2019s going to be fairly minimal,\u201d he said. \u201cThe way I like to think of it is likening it to a high school pep rally. You bring out the faithful, but you don\u2019t necessarily convince someone to change the teams they\u2019re playing for.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump was on the campaign trail in Nebraska and was asked why he is holding rallies in closely contested states like Texas.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I go there, they pick up a lot of steam. When I go there, they win, and that\u2019s what I\u2019m doing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Wednesday\u2019s rally is set for 4:30 p.m. at Freeman Coliseum. Trump is scheduled to take the stage at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n
