SAN ANTONIO \u2014Two 16-year-old boys were detained Tuesday morning after a student was allegedly threatened with what appeared to be a real gun in the parking lot of Pieper High School.<\/p>\n

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the school is safe and investigators do not believe there was ever an active threat inside the building. Deputies recovered a realistic-looking Airsoft gun, a knife and alcohol from a vehicle in the school parking lot<\/p>\n

The school is secured,\u201d Salazar said. \u201cWe do have two suspects in custody right now. We don’t believe that there was ever an actual threat to the school.<\/p>\n

The incident began when a student called his mother and told her he had been threatened with a weapon before school. His mother then called 911.<\/p>\n

Salazar said the threat appears to have stemmed from a dispute involving a girl whom both boys had dated at some point. The Airsoft gun was allegedly displayed in a threatening way during the confrontation.<\/p>\n

The weapon was brought onto school property but apparently never entered the school building.<\/p>\n

The threat took place in the parking lot of the school prior to school starting,\u201d Salazar said. \u201cThe weapon did make it onto the school property, but not into the school itself, as far as we can tell.<\/p>\n

Salazar said both teens who were detained were together when the student was threatened. Investigators were working with the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office to determine what charges they could face.<\/p>\n

A knife was also found in the vehicle, although Salazar said investigators had not determined whether it was used during the confrontation.<\/p>\n

The report of a weapon prompted a large response and a lockdown at Pieper High School. Salazar said one teen was initially detained, but deputies continued searching for a second person.<\/p>\n

As deputies searched the campus, students sheltering inside began calling their parents and 911 because they were frightened and unsure of what was happening.<\/p>\n

Salazar said deputies decided to search the entire school to make sure no additional threat existed and that every student knew the campus was safe.<\/p>\n

We kept getting calls, 911 calls from kiddos inside the school, either calling their parents or calling 911 directly from inside the school, terrified at what was going on,\u201d Salazar said. \u201cSo we went ahead and made the decision. Let’s just clear it all the way through to make sure that everybody’s clear on what’s going on.<\/p>\n

Deputies eventually searched the entire campus and found no additional threat.<\/p>\n

Salazar acknowledged the large response may have alarmed students and parents but said authorities treated the initial report as if the weapon could have been real.<\/p>\n

I’d rather be accused of overreacting to a situation involving a weapon in a school than underreacting,\u201d Salazar said.<\/p>\n

The sheriff’s office was working with school officials to clear deputies from the campus and allow parents to reunite with their children. Salazar asked parents to be patient as that process continued, saying he understood nerves were frayed after the morning’s lockdown.<\/p>\n
