If you see political content slip through, something has gone wrong, and I remove it. When you visit us, I want you to get a break from that stress. We\u2019re here for entertainment\u2014to help you have fun and stay informed. We occasionally weigh in on social issues, but I would never dream of telling you how to vote. You can sort that out somewhere else.<\/p>\n
What I do know is comedy, and I love it. When somebody steps in a big ol\u2019 pile o\u2019 poo, it\u2019s funny.<\/p>\n
Enter Marjorie Taylor Greene.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m not entirely sure where MTG lands on the political spectrum these days, nor do I care. I don\u2019t know which wing of the bird I might ruffle by posting this, but I\u2019m hoping neither. Imagine an actor or some other celebrity making the same mistake, and you\u2019d probably grin at the ridiculousness.<\/p>\n
This is a case of somebody trying to sound knowledgeable about a place and landing with a thud.<\/p>\n
In a Facebook reel, Greene complains about gas prices and says they shouldn\u2019t be a problem here in Lubbock, in the Permian Basin. She repeats \u201cPermian Basin\u201d\u00a0again and talks about how we’re “swimming in oil” here.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s just one little problem: Lubbock is in the South Plains. We\u2019re up on the Caprock. Midland and Odessa are the cities most associated with the Permian Basin. And believe it or not, calling Lubbock the Permian Basin is an insult to both Lubbock and Midland-Odessa.<\/p>\n
Texas is big, but that doesn\u2019t make its regions interchangeable. Saying it several times doesn\u2019t move Lubbock farther south, either.\u00a0\u00a0I guess there are a few pumpjacks around, but Lubbock is more cotton than oil.<\/p>\n
Now, she may have a point worth discussing about gas prices. With all that oil production down the road, plenty of us have wondered why filling up still hurts.<\/p>\n
But that\u2019s another conversation. What caught my attention was the confident geography lesson that needed a geography lesson.<\/p>\n
