After 40 years in one city, 500 homes a day, and millions of mail deliveries, Jeff Gray made his final delivery in June of this year.<\/p>\n

PLANO, Texas \u2014 When you\u2019ve been around the block long enough, you get to know people. And for the residents of Country Place in Plano<\/a>, no one knew them better than their mailman, Jeff Gray.<\/p>\n

Before Jeff ever put on the uniform, his mother saw something special in him and encouraged him to apply.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s memory and numbers,\u201d she told him. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t know anybody better than you.\u201d<\/p>\n

That gift became his superpower on the streets of Country Place. For decades, Jeff memorized not just addresses\u2014but stories, families, and friendships.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cYou want the current owner or the prior owner?\u201d he laughed, recalling how well he knew every home on his route.<\/p>\n

Over time, his work became something deeper. \u201cI love them and they love me and we both know it,\u201d Jeff said.<\/p>\n

Neighbors describe him as more than a mailman.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe knows all 12 of my grandchildren,\u201d one resident said. \u201cThrough rain, through shine, through cold, through heat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Country Place, one of Plano\u2019s oldest developed neighborhoods, had a special connection to its mailman\u2014so much so that even Jeff got mail.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNo one ever did it like you,\u201d read one letter.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe goes to weddings, he goes to funerals, parties,\u201d another neighbor said. Over the years, Jeff turned off stoves, watered plants, and checked in on residents while they were away. \u201cHe\u2019s delivering love!\u201d a friend added.<\/p>\n

After 40 years, 500 homes a day, and millions of deliveries, Jeff Gray made his final delivery in late June of 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really means a lot to see so many faces,\u201d he said at his retirement celebration at the Country Place clubhouse, where generations gathered to honor him. \u201cI am thankful for all of you to come here to think of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jeff, who just turned 60, says it\u2019s time to retire and travel\u2014but not before one last route. \u201cHello and goodbye!\u201d he said, hugging neighbors along the way.<\/p>\n

One resident summed up the emotion of the day: \u201cI don\u2019t cry at weddings, I don\u2019t cry at funerals. I\u2019m not a cryer. But you cry for the mailman? Is that crazy?\u201d<\/p>\n

For Jeff, delivering mail meant opening more than just mailboxes\u2014it meant opening doors into people\u2019s lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI had probably 20 people on my route who came and paid their respects when mom died. And that\u2026 you don\u2019t forget. Ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a world that\u2019s moved on from milkmen and paperboys, the mail carrier remains\u2014connecting communities one doorstep at a time.<\/p>\n
