open letter<\/a> to Superintendent Peter Licata, Governor Greg Abbott and other district leaders expressing frustration with scripted lesson plans implemented as part of a major overhaul of classroom instruction. <\/p>\n“So we kinda learn it by writing it down, but we’re not really thinking. We’re just copying words down on a page,\u201d said Toby Calder, a 6th grader at McLean Middle School. <\/p>\n
\u201cEvery day you come in and see my teachers tired, and people are always walking in and out with clipboards, and it’s getting overstimulating and stuff,\u201d said Clara Perkes, a 4th grader at Lily B. Clayton Elementary.<\/p>\n
The letter, signed by dozens of students and another thousand people on a Change.org petition, points to errors in the mandated learning guides and a loss of passion for learning.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor me, I just really strongly believe that education needs to be about exploration. And when we have all these mandated curriculums and set things that we are supposed to be doing every single day, it takes away that discovery and that joy in finding new things,\u201d said Paschal High Senior Charlotte Hall.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow my teachers, they aren’t coming in and showing me what they care about. They’re not teaching me about things that inspire them and I’m not feeling inspired because they’re reading off of a slide show which anyone can do,\u201d said Fruge.<\/p>\n
The district responded to NBC5\u2019s request for comment with a statement: <\/p>\n
\u201cFort Worth ISD is aware of the student petition and appreciates students sharing their perspectives. Superintendent Licata meets regularly with students from across the district. Those conversations range from lunches and athletics to classroom instruction and college opportunities, and several student recommendations have already led to changes this year. That work will continue, and we welcome feedback from every student as we work to provide high-quality instruction in every classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n
The students say they’ll continue to advocate.<\/p>\n
Hall even plans to major in public policy after experiencing the takeover firsthand. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt really changed things; it really did.
