SAN ANTONIO – A dog seen in a widely shared video is now under the care of San Antonio Animal Care Services as investigators look into allegations of animal cruelty.<\/p>\n
On Sept. 28, a surveillance camera captured footage of a 53-year-old woman in a motor-assisted wheelchair allegedly striking a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois mix named Duke multiple times in the driveway of a home in the 8000 block of Cloud Trails on the Northwest Side. The video appears to show the woman yelling and swearing at the dog before grabbing, hitting and kicking it as the animal cowers between two vehicles.<\/p>\n
After circulating for several days on social media, the alleged abuse was not reported to authorities or Animal Care Services until a day before their investigation began. Animal cruelty investigators canvassed the neighborhood and interviewed witnesses, quickly identifying a person of interest.<\/p>\n
“There’s the possibility that there’s an animal that is at stake, an animal’s safety that is at stake. In this particular case, we never received a report until just a day ago,” said Lisa Norwood from San Antonio Animal Care Services.<\/p>\n
Norwood also called on the community to help investigators with any details that may identify those involved.<\/p>\n
“We need that community support not just in reporting an incident immediately when it occurs but also in checking out those fine details,” she said.<\/p>\n
Investigators with Animal Care Services confirmed that Duke had no immediately obvious injuries from the incident but is receiving a complete veterinary check as the investigation moves forward. The agency says the woman identified in the video has been cooperative and expressed remorse.<\/p>\n
San Antonio Animal Care Services took Duke into custody after executing a warrant at a residence in the New Territories subdivision. Authorities will hold a custody hearing in municipal court within the next ten days to determine whether Duke will stay with Animal Care Services.
