Harwood St. The concept takes the familiar Dallas steakhouse and places it in a setting that feels more like a private art collector’s dining room, with rare objects and artwork woven into the experience.

I went in expecting a steakhouse, of course. Though what I didn’t expect, was how much time I’d spend looking around the room between bites.

A Steakhouse Surrounded By History

Pieces from the Barbier-Mueller Collection are displayed throughout Docent, alongside works from the Samurai Collection and other unexpected finds. The Barbier-Mueller Collection spans centuries and continents, with sculptures, ceremonial objects, textiles and artifacts representing different cultures and traditions. The pieces give Docent its personality.

Photo: Matilda Preisendorf | Local Profile

On the main floor, the dining room sticks closer to steakhouse tradition, with white tablecloths, full-service dining and a large wraparound patio. Downstairs, the mood shifts. The bar level has its own dining area and a more relaxed atmosphere for drinks, dinner or watching a game. It is still an upscale space and one worth dressing up for, but it feels considerably more casual than the main dining room.

The Main Event

Docent’s beef program is one of the restaurant’s biggest draws. The menu centers on HWD Beef, Harwood Hospitality’s exclusive premium beef program developed with ranchers in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. The program uses cattle from the Akaushi bloodline and follows a zero-waste philosophy intended to make use of the entire animal.

The Barbier-Mueller family and Harwood’s culinary team spent two years working with a local rancher to develop the program. Since HWD Beef is exclusive to Harwood restaurants, Docent has access to cuts that aren’t available elsewhere.

Photo: Matilda Preisendorf | Local Profile

The lineup includes filet mignon, New York strip, ribeye, bone-in strip, Chateaubriand and porterhouse, with steaks starting around $72. HWD Texas Wagyu selections, including dry-aged New York strip and ribeye, start closer to $85.

And then there is the Kobe.

Docent is a designated member of the Kobe Beef Marketing & Distribution Promotion Association, making it authorized to serve certified Kobe Beef. Several A5 Wagyu selections from Japan are available by the ounce, along with a rotating Kobe flight featuring five cuts.

What We Tried

Since I’m a vegetarian, I approached the menu a little differently than the average steakhouse customer. Fortunately, my plus one has no trouble indulging in a more carnivorous menu.

Photo: Matilda Preisendorf | Local Profile

He started with the braised pork belly, where tender, slow-cooked pork was paired with bright apple slaw and yuzu-miso sauce. The combination brought acidity and sweetness to the rich pork, keeping it from feeling too heavy. The deviled eggs took another familiar steakhouse appetizer in a more playful direction, topped with pork belly jam, crisp puffed rice and fresh chive for a combination of creamy, salty and crunchy textures.

The steakhouse chop was another standout starter — a composed salad with enough personality to hold its own alongside the restaurant’s heavier dishes. It combines egg, tomato, bacon and cheddar with creamy green goddess dressing, bringing some of the familiar flavors of a classic steakhouse salad into a different format. (And for my fellow vegetarians, fear not: The bacon can stay behind.)

For the main course, he went with the 16-ounce center-cut ribeye with béarnaise. The steak had a generous seared exterior and tender, richly marbled center, with plenty of beefy flavor on its own. The béarnaise added a buttery, herbaceous finish without overpowering the steak.

Photo: Matilda Preisendorf | Local Profile

I ordered the hand-pulled noodles, a seasonal dish that changes with what’s available. During our visit, they came with lobster, spinach, extra virgin olive oil, lemon and garlic. I skipped the lobster, but the noodles were still exceptional. Lemon and garlic kept the dish bright and savory, while spinach and olive oil gave it plenty of flavor on their own. After all, there is more to Docent’s menu than its beef program.

There’s More Than Steak On The Menu

For those who do want to build a meal around more than a steak, the menu offers plenty of options. Other starters include lump crab cake, Kobe potstickers, oysters, steak tartare sliders, tempura lobster, spicy tuna tartare and a seafood tower. Seasonal entrées range from Texas bison filet and Elysian Fields rack of lamb to Kan Kan pork chop, Ora King salmon and miso Chilean sea bass.

The sides also cover plenty of steakhouse territory, including tallow-fried shoestring fries, whipped potatoes, mac and cheese, lobster mac and cheese and potatoes au gratin. The Brussels sprouts take a more unexpected turn with Japanese whiskey, soy, maple and braised bacon.

Dessert keeps things classic with baked Alaska, coconut cream pie, New York cheesecake, flourless chocolate cake and bread pudding.

Don’t Skip The Bar

The cocktail menu follows the same mix of classics and unexpected combinations.

The Bluebonnet Drop is a must-order, combining gin, bergamot, ripe blueberries, sweet basil and lemon with a sugar rim. It was bright and fruit-forward without becoming overly sweet. My parter was a big fan of the Well Done, taking a more savory route with Wagyu-washed rye, cognac, Trinity bitters, maple and bacon.

Photo: Matilda Preisendorf | Local Profile

I also went with martini service and chose the pickle martini with bread-and-butter pickles. It landed on the pleasantly sweet-and-tangy side rather than going aggressively sour, which made it an easy companion to the richer dishes.

We finished with the Basque cheesecake, served with raspberry-yuzu sauce and fresh berries. The tart fruit cut through the richness of the cheesecake and made for a bright finish to an otherwise decidedly indulgent meal.

Docent Steak is now open at 2801 N.
