Regarding \u201cWhy your Houston energy bill may be higher in September, even with a fixed-rate plan<\/a>,\u201d (Sept. 30): Once again, CenterPoint Energy has issued another notice to all its customers that we need to pay more for the poles and wires, etc., whereby these increases will ultimately generate a rate of return, which basically is guaranteed profit. These actions by CenterPoint were approved by several meetings in July and August by the weakness of the Public Utility Commission.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One would assume that members of the commission heard that the fish were biting at CenterPoint’s private fishing lodge called the “pond<\/a>” and acted accordingly for this increase by CenterPoint.<\/p>\n

His thoughtful piece was also a reminder of what makes Houston unique. Generations of innovation, expertise and ingenuity have made our region the Energy Capital of the World. Keeping that distinction means inspiring the next generation to carry it forward.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s one reason Energy Day has become a Houston tradition.<\/p>\n

On Oct. 17, Houston\u2019s largest and free STEM family festival returns to Sam Houston Park for its 14th year. More than 50 interactive exhibits will give K-12 students and their families the chance to conduct experiments, meet energy professionals, and explore the many forms of energy and STEM careers available right here in Houston.<\/p>\n

Hands-on experiences can turn curiosity into opportunity. By connecting young people with energy professionals and educators, Energy Day helps students see how what they learn in the classroom can lead to exciting careers in their own community.<\/p>\n

The festival also celebrates students and educators participating in year-round academic competitions, awarding thousands of dollars to support STEM education.<\/p>\n

Mintz offered a compelling look at why Houston\u2019s connection to energy is unlike anywhere else. We have an opportunity and a responsibility to make sure the next generation understands that connection and sees a place for themselves in its future.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how Houston remains the Energy Capital of the World for generations to come.<\/p>\n

Regarding \u201cTexas investigators seek evidence of manslaughter, other crimes in 27 flood deaths at Camp Mystic<\/a>,\u201d (Sept. 22): When did the July 4 flood go from a tragedy to a witch hunt?\u00a0 As a Mystic mother, my heart broke when I heard about the wall of water that destroyed so many lives \u2014 particularly since my daughter had spent 12 years at Mystic, including one as a counselor in one of the very cabins that was destroyed. When we chose Mystic, we recognized that the Guadalupe River ran alongside. In fact, we saw that as one of the main benefits of the camp.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But we also recognized that any river can flood and noted how high and well-built the cabins were. What we could not have anticipated, and in fact no one could have anticipated, was the event that took place on July 4. It was a tragedy. But what is equally sad is the desire of some, particularly those in the political arena, to destroy Mystic altogether.\u00a0 As they say, \u201cNever let a serious crisis go to waste\u201d and \u201cNever let a tragedy go unexploited.\u201d<\/p>\n

Camp Mystic should be leveled to the ground and never rebuilt. The owners had no concern for hundreds of children. They don’t deserve to run a camp and endanger more young lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
