There’s a few reasons people keep coming back to this neighborhood eatery, and affordability just happens to be one of them.

Admittedly, I had never been to Oblate Cafe until fairly recently when my search for budget-friendly eats in San Antonio brought me to the humble restaurant. Various colors accented the walls inside that were furthermore decorated with knick-knacks and paintings. The business allows for self-seating, and there are plenty of tables to go around.

Once I found a seat through a maze of chairs, a server came and handed me a menu, and I turned to the lunch section. The Mexican plates comes with free chips and salsa after 11 a.m., and it just so happened to be right around noon. With dozens of plates to choose from, I eventually went with the enchilada and carne guisada plate, a full lunch plate that comes with rice, beans and tortillas for a total of $11.50.

While I waited for my food to arrive, I couldn’t help but tune into a joyous conversation happened with a group of women who were having some good laughs together in the back of the restaurant. I also noted one of the servers singing to herself as she walked between tables, and another was busy connecting with return customers who were right at home at Oblate Cafe.

I nibbled on perfectly fine chips and salsa while I observed my surroundings, and soon, my plate had arrived served to the edges. The server also dropped by some spicy salsa verde that made the meal tastier (and tangier) with each drop. I took the tortillas that came with the meal and filled them with savory carne guisada, beans and some of the extra cheese that came atop the enchiladas to make my own tacos.

The enchiladas were as good as any you’ll find in San Antonio, with plenty of cheese and sauce, but the carne guisada was very much the star of the plate with its deep, rich flavor. I pretty much ate everything except for a few bites of tortilla. It was a lot of food in one sitting, and I could’ve walked away with some leftovers if it weren’t for my appetite that day.

Oblate Cafe is one of those places where if you go more than once, you are likely to be remembered by one of the servers. You also won’t have to dip into the retirement fund to afford one of its Mexican food plates, so a little bit goes a long way here.

Find it: 904 Oblate Drive, San Antonio, TX 78216

Oblate Cafe has been dishing out the enchiladas and tacos since about 2004, and the San Antonio restaurant…

[8
1112,820,82,84,83
post-459297","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-antonio","tag-mysafood","tag-mysastaff","tag-san-antonio","tag-san-antonio-headlines","tag-san-antonio-news
["GET
