A project they worked on for months debuts tonight on the big screen.

Helen Flanagan and Eres Stone are seniors at The Hockaday School.

Over the past few months, the friends took their phones across Dallas and sat down with more than a dozen people they’d never met, whose lives and views are very different from theirs.

They were the first youth apprentices of Our Human Voices, a new national campaign from the nonprofit Nest Foundation.

The teenagers’ recorded conversations explore what happens when assumptions about one another are replaced with curiosity and conversation.

“We really were just curious to learn anything and everything. And so, yeah, some of the questions we asked, one that I liked particularly was, what’s something you carry with you? Because that one got taken a lot of different directions,” said Helen Flanagan, 17. “There were some people who took that as, like, what’s like a burden or like a hard time that kind of weighs upon you? Or like, what’s a piece of advice you carry with you?”

“We were hearing a lot of themes of family, community, how love helped people get through hard points in their life,” Eres Stone, 17, said. “And I think that that’s a beautiful thing that came out of it is we saw how everyone has experienced love and how that’s something that everyone can share, and everyone has in common.

In those conversations with strangers and hearing the wisdom that comes with age, the teenagers got guidance and advice they’ll use in the future.

While they learned about others, Eres the extrovert and Helen the introvert saw themselves differently, too.

“Doing this project with Eres, it kind of showed me like just all the benefits of conversing with random people, even if it’s just like small talk, like, I don’t know, like chatting to the barista at the coffee shop, anything like that, like how beneficial it can be and how that connection can really help people and make them feel seen,” Flanagan told NBC 5.

“I always say I can talk to a wall and love finding connection with people. They share their story. I’m like, oh my gosh, me too. I share my story. We’re like, oh no way. We’re so similar, or we’re so different. And I think I learned about myself that you can learn so much more about a person when you’re not responding, when you’re not saying anything, and when all you’re doing is asking them more questions and saying, tell me more about that, because maybe no one’s ever asked them, tell me about that,” Stone said.

Lessons the high school seniors will take with them beyond the halls of Hockaday. Join us:

Our Human Voices: Dallas Community Screening

Wednesday, Oct. 7, 7 p.m.

Angelika Film Center, 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane, Suite 230, Dallas.

The evening includes video highlights from our interviews, then a discussion and Q&A with some of the people the students interviewed.

It’s a big day for two Dallas teenagers.
