HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Eight of the 15 seats on the Texas State Board of Education are up for election this midterm, and the board’s decisions affect all Texans, whether they have children in public school or not.

The State Board of Education has been making major decisions about policy and standards for Texas public schools since 1866.

The board reviews and sets the state’s education standards, known as Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS. These standards set the baseline for what children should learn and be able to do by the end of each grade.

The board also makes sure that curricula approved for use in Texas public schools meet those TEKS standards. One approved curriculum is the controversial, state-created Bluebonnet Curriculum, which has drawn backlash for its Christian-focused teachings.

The 15 board members also help oversee the Texas Permanent School Fund, a $60 billion fund made up of mineral and oil rights and public land grants.

The fund allows the state to guarantee money exists for lenders. In turn, lenders offer school districts lower rates on construction fees or bonds. Taxpayers then see the lower cost reflected on their property tax. According to the State Board of Education, this saves the public about $150 million every year.

Where you live will determine which seat you may be voting on. Check with your local election office to see your sample ballot before Election Day on Nov. 3.
