It\u2019s called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallascountyvotes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Full-Sample-Ballot-Watermark-8.5x14-Legal_110326.pdf\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Proposition A<\/a> on your ballot and redirects more money to address homelessness. <\/p>\n<p>For the last five years, the focus on addressing homelessness has largely centered on downtown Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>Streets lined with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcdfw.com\/news\/local\/council-approves-2-5-million-for-additional-homelessness-response\/3768911\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">encampments a few years ago are clear now<\/a>, with an 80-percent reduction in people living outside. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, service providers along with both county and city leaders spoke in Dallas\u2019 West End neighborhood, asking for support at the polls next month for a ballot initiative that would increase property taxes, about $60 per year for the average home. <\/p>\n<p>The increase would create a permanent, $100 million dollar funding source to expand mental health and addiction treatment and expand a \u201cstreet to home\u201d initiative and spread it to all parts of Dallas County.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Kahn with <a href=\"https:\/\/housingforwardntx.org\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Housing Forward<\/a> says <a href=\"https:\/\/housingforwardntx.org\/data\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">93% of the 25,000 people they\u2019ve helped so far<\/a> have not re-entered the homelessness system. But she added that reach is limited.<\/p>\n<p>Countywide, only 6 in 10 people who need help to get out of homelessness can find the help, Kahn said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe homelessness that you still see shows that we have to do more,\u201d Kahn said.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters believe more investment in addressing homelessness will keep Dallas County in a spot to continue attracting financial investment and growth by helping its unhoused neighbors. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcdfw.com\/news\/local\/homelessness-tax-increase-question-sent-to-dallas-county-voters\/4061158\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas County Commissioners had their own 3-2 split vote in August<\/a> to support placing the item on the November ballot for voters to decide. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are expecting us to do more and they are right to expect us to do more,\u201d County Judge Clay Jenkins said.<\/p>\n<p>But how much more voters are willing to give, amid higher national inflation and prices, will begin to be answered when early voting starts Oct. 19.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dallas County leaders are asking homeowners to raise their taxes next month.
