AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 Austin\u2019s hospital of the future is starting to take shape, and artificial intelligence is being designed into it from day one.<\/p>\n

Leaders from Dell Medical School, The University of Texas at Austin, and MD Anderson Cancer Center gathered at UT\u2019s Real Health AI Symposium to discuss their vision for an intelligent hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we could orchestrate care across the continuum, both in the medical center and outside the medical center in a connected way, it\u2019ll help make us a more intelligent health system,\u201d said Michael J. Ryan, chief administrative officer at Dell Medical School.<\/p>\n

The goal is to make the experience easier and more informed for patients. That could mean helping patients get to the right place faster, giving doctors a fuller picture of a patient\u2019s needs and keeping people connected to their care after they return home.<\/p>\n

A smarter hospital from the start<\/p>\n

Rather than adding technology to an existing building years later, planners want the new hospital to be highly instrumented from the beginning, with sensors and systems that can generate useful data.<\/p>\n

\u201cBuilding in the hospital from the beginning, though, is how do we make that hospital smart?\u201d said Jim Buntrock, Chief Data Officer at Dell Medical School. \u201cLots of sensors, highly instrumented, generating data. That data will also help give insight to patients, help provide insight to care providers, and ultimately help patients get better.\u201d<\/p>\n

The data is meant to support care, not replace it. Leaders emphasized that AI should act as a powerful tool for doctors and nurses, while clinical judgment remains firmly in human hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can we take advantage of AI in a new care delivery mindset, a new care delivery model that uses AI for what it\u2019s good at, but it reserves and maintains that clinical judgment that we have as providers in taking care of those patients,\u201d Buntrock said.<\/p>\n

Keeping the patient at the center<\/p>\n

The vision is for AI to support patients throughout their journey: from arrival at the hospital to surgery, recovery, and the transition back home.<\/p>\n

It is an ambitious idea, and the leaders behind it acknowledge it has not been done quite this way before. Their challenge is to build a system that puts patients first, uses AI responsibly, and is flexible enough to keep pace with technology rather than becoming outdated within a few years.<\/p>\n
