When Isa\u2019s mother was afraid to send her nonverbal son to school at the start of third grade, Walt Disney Elementary teacher Jo Meek called that evening with a simple request: give her a chance.<\/p>\n
Within a week, Isa was \u201cwalking taller,\u201d his mother wrote in Meek\u2019s Teacher of the Month nomination. Now, on good mornings, he squeals with joy as he walks into school \u2014 a sound his mother says means everything.<\/p>\n
Meek, a Fundamental Skills teacher for students in grades 3-5, has been named Teacher of the Month for the lasting impact she makes on students and the families who love them.<\/p>\n
Her support extends beyond the classroom. According to Isa\u2019s mother, Meek volunteered with children on weekends, gave up summer days to help the family, and visited their home so Isa\u2019s routines could better match school. When Isa needed a PET scan, Meek used her day off to sit with his mother at the hospital<\/p>\n
\u201cShe promised I would never go alone,\u201d his mother wrote.<\/p>\n
At school, Meek builds a team where every child is celebrated, challenged and truly seen, the nomination said. She believes in what each student can become \u2014 and holds them to high expectations, even when doing so is difficult.<\/p>\n
\u201cMs. Meek taught me to believe in my son and to fight for him,\u201d Isa\u2019s mother wrote. \u201cShe changes children, and then she changes the families who love them.\u201d<\/p>\n
