{"id":460721,"date":"2026-10-09T02:02:08","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T02:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/460721\/"},"modified":"2026-10-09T02:02:08","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T02:02:08","slug":"city-council-wants-impact-assessments-on-ice-facility-may-sue-to-stop-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/460721\/","title":{"rendered":"City council wants impact assessments on ICE facility, may sue to stop it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A majority of the San Antonio City Council took a first step in fighting against a new ICE processing center.<\/p>\n<p>They voted to have SAWS, CPS Energy, and other agencies assess the impact the facility will have on city resources and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>The News 4 I-Team examined the significance of Thursday\u2019s move.<\/p>\n<p>Some councilmembers want to file a lawsuit against ICE and Homeland Security to prevent the processing center from opening.<\/p>\n<p>Five of them signed a memo requesting those assessments and it says they want to discuss potential legal action at next week&#8217;s council meeting.<\/p>\n<p>That 1,500 bed ICE facility is expected to open in the spring.<\/p>\n<p>Community organizers and advocates pleaded with the council to try and block it from opening.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED | <a href=\"https:\/\/news4sanantonio.com\/news\/local\/protesters-march-against-planned-ice-detention-facility-on-san-antonios-east-side\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Protesters march against planned ICE detention facility on San Antonio\u2019s East Side<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cICE is not going to stop. This agency and its contractors have demonstrated time and again it does not care about the people they arrest and detain,\u201d said Sarah Cruz of the ACLU of Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Councilmembers admit they have little power to stop the federal government, but they hope to at least delay the facility by ordering SAWS and CPS Energy to assess its demand for energy and water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed ICE facility was built to be a supply warehouse not to detain 1,500 of our loved ones. ICE must be made to answer important questions about the city resources it will waste,\u201d said Prescilla Olivarez, an attorney with the Immigrant Legal Resource Center.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor and eight councilmembers voted to have the impact assessments done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all have to lock arms together to push back on ICE,\u201d said District 7 Councilmember Marina Alderete Gavito.<\/p>\n<p>District 9 Councilmember Misty Spears and Marc Whyte who represents District 10 were the only \u201cno\u201d votes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a city council, not congress. Our responsibility is to govern San Antonio, not use our public utilities as a political instrument against the federal government,\u201d Spears said.<\/p>\n<p>Spears reminded councilmembers the city operated a migrant resource center a few years ago that processed thousands of people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid we demand the same environmental, infrastructure, water, wastewater, and electricity assessments when the city was operating a migrant facility?
