{"id":460773,"date":"2026-10-09T03:14:10","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T03:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/460773\/"},"modified":"2026-10-09T03:14:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T03:14:10","slug":"new-ghost-traffic-unit-in-castle-hills-catching-speeding-drivers-by-surprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/460773\/","title":{"rendered":"New &#8216;ghost&#8217; traffic unit in Castle Hills catching speeding drivers by surprise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 Castle Hills police say they have a new tool to catch speeding drivers, which many people may never see coming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">It\u2019s an unmarked, sporty-looking Ford Mustang that hit the city\u2019s streets a little more than a month ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The so-called \u201cghost\u201d unit is emblazoned with lettering identifying it as a police car, but it\u2019s only visible from certain angles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cWhen they see the traffic unit as an unmarked Mustang, they just view it as another car on the roadway,\u201d said Sgt. Gary Tomblin, explaining how drivers may be taken by surprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">A single officer, Gabriel Galan, mans the flashy car during daytime hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">At night, a different officer is designated to watch the streets for drivers who are ignoring the rules of the road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cWe deploy it into areas of the city that we\u2019ve noticed higher speeding, accidents, road rage incidents, school zones,\u201d Tomblin said. \u201cJust on his own, (Galan) is averaging upwards of 300, 350 citations a month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Tomblin said the city\u2019s biggest trouble spots for speeders include Northwest Military Highway, West Avenue and a stretch of Loop 410 that runs through Castle Hills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Tyler Grona was traveling along Northwest Military Highway Thursday morning when she suddenly saw flashing lights in her rearview mirror.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cI was, like, \u2018is that real?\u2019 And then walked up. I was, like, \u2018nice car!\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t expecting (the officer) to come out of a Mustang.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Grona was accused of making a common mistake for drivers in that area: believing that Northwest Military Highway, as its name implies, is an actual highway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">In reality, the speed limit on that Castle Hills street is only 35 miles per hour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cHe said that I was going 45 (mph), but I looked down, and I was going 35 (mph) because I was trying to be good,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Grona ended up driving off with only a warning instead of a citation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">But she said she did learn a valuable lesson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cDon\u2019t speed on Northwest Military &#8230; or any road,\u201d Grona said, correcting herself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">While 350 citations per month may seem like a lot, the City of San Antonio, by comparison, issues more than ten times that amount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Data provided by the San Antonio Police Department show that the department issued, on average, more than 4,100 tickets per month in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Figures for the first nine months of this year average out to about the same number.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Read also: <\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 by KSAT &#8211; All rights reserved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"SAN ANTONIO \u2013 Castle Hills police say they have a new tool to catch speeding drivers, which many&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":460774,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[5757,41767,82,84,83,30299],"class_list":["post-460773","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-antonio","tag-castle-hills","tag-castle-hills-police-department","tag-san-antonio","tag-san-antonio-headlines","tag-san-antonio-news","tag-speeding"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/460773","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=460773"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/460773\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/460774"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=460773"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=460773"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=460773"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
