Over the past year or so, a handful of country-leaning, Western-inspired, boot-scootin’ bars have opened, particularly around downtown, and this new cohort is putting its own spin on the honky-tonk tradition.

The new wave of country bars is not just continuing the tradition of cowboy hats, boots and beer; they are building on what the dance halls and saloons of the past established while offering something fresh for wider appeal. Take Moonshine as one example. Owner Abel Mota Jr. said that a combination of personal tastes and Tennessee influences was considered when designing Moonshine, which is why the bar is more spirit–forward than a classic country bar.

Article continues below this ad

Moonshine hosts live music, like most other honky-tonks, but rather than beer being the bar’s focus, the business has a team of mixologists shaking and stirring up cocktails, many of which feature moonshine and whiskey. Pete’s Hot Chicken is also a fixture at the Pearl-adjacent bar, bringing that Nashville flavor.

Moonshine is located near San Antonio’s Pearl.

Polly Anna Rocha/MySA

“I wanted to bring the Nashville hot chicken instead of the typical Texas barbecue, and then our moonshine cocktails come from Nashville,” Mota told MySA in a phone interview. “I would say that we separate ourselves from a lot of other country bars because we do have a craft cocktail program.”

Article continues below this ad

Another bar that’s relatively new to downtown San Antonio is Howdy, Sore Loser, a Western-themed concept from the same couple who opened Pink Shark. Co-owner Amber Hernandez told MySA that, while the bar definitely straddles the county line, it’s firstly a sports bar.

“A lot of the traffic that we get is for sports. NFL Sundays are really big, and Saturday college football is good for us as well,” Hernandez said over the phone. “Upstairs is more of a saloon kind of atmosphere where you can dance and stuff, and then downstairs is where we have all the TV monitors and pool table and dart boards.”

Howdy, Sore Loser is located in the hustle and bustle of downtown, so naturally, much of the foot traffic is from out-of-towners visiting San Antonio. Hernandez explained that tourism is extremely helpful in generating business for the bar, and the theme is a major draw for those traveling patrons.

“We have locals that come in here that live downtown, but a lot of our traffic is people that are in town for conventions or concerts,” Hernandez said. “The novelty of it all is exciting for people.”

Article continues below this ad

Customers are already stopping by The Rowdy Spur, a new downtown bar.

Courtesy of The Rowdy Spur

Similarly, The Rowdy Spur understands that its audience is largely tourists, since it is positioned in the dead center of downtown. The bar was previously a Pat O’Brien’s but closed in 2025 after more than 20 years. Owner Cory Neal, who had a guiding hand in the rebrand, said that The Rowdy Spur came about as a Texas answer to what was previously a New Orleans-style bar.

In going full Texan, The Rowdy Spur sets the stage for country music, but since San Antonio is known as a rock ‘n’ roll city, performers and bands of all kinds grace the space. At the same time, much of Neal’s Pat O’Brien’s team continues to work in the bar following the rebrand, so it acts as more of a melting pot of music and people than a traditional honky-tonk scene.

Article continues below this ad

“I have bartenders that have been there for 17, 18, 20+ years that stuck around, so they know how to make a drink. We know how to throw a good party, and that’s ultimately what I think the honky-tonk vibe is about,” Neal said in a phone interview. “It’s about enjoying live music, having a good time and being able to just relax.”

The entrance of The Rowdy Spur on the River Walk in San Antonio, which took over the former home of Pat O’Brien’s.

Polly Anna Rocha/MySA

In this day and age, it’s not as viable for a business to be just one thing, so it comes as no surprise that so many bars that lean into the honky-tonk, Western-style spirit are also serving a little something extra, from cocktails to sports to rock music. After all, there’s plenty of room for all kinds deep in the heart of Texas.

Howdy, Sore Loser is a bar located in downtown San Antonio. Polly Anna Rocha/MySA Honky-tonks and country music…

[8
821,1112,820,82,84,83
post-460791","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-antonio","tag-mysabusiness","tag-mysafood","tag-mysastaff","tag-san-antonio","tag-san-antonio-headlines","tag-san-antonio-news
["GET
