Playing a team with a minus-5 turnover differential, the Cowboys coughed the ball up three times, including an interception at the Bucs\u2019 12 with just over a minute remaining and a chance to tie the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Here are five thoughts from a clunker of significance:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coaches do the dumbest things<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/article\/tim-cowlishaw-cowboys-buccaneers-report-card-22468388.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">For all the criticism\u00a0Brian Schottenheimer has received<\/a> over game and clock management this season, Tampa Bay\u2019s Todd Bowles said \u201cHold my Miller Lite.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the\u00a0Bucs up by two touchdowns and facing 4th and goal from the Cowboys\u2019 1, Bowles elected to go for a touchdown, a choice in which the risks far outweighed the rewards. Yes, a TD would have made it a 31-10 game, but that was just points. The real reward to be had was to extend a lead past two scores, easily accomplishable with a chip-shot field goal.<\/p>\n<p>The decision was literally the only possible lifeline the Cowboys had.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>And\u00a0Bowles gave it to them when Sean Tucker was stopped just short of the goal line.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Cowboys, of course, responded with a 99-yard touchdown drive to draw them within a touchdown with 5:26 to play.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are times to send messages that a coach believes in his offense. This was a chance for a coach to win a game. And he dropped it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Worst loss of the Brian Schottenheimer era? Tell us your grade for Cowboys-Buccaneers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family:Rubik, sans-serif\" class=\"fs14 mt8 mb8 c-gray600\">The Cowboys did the unthinkable in losing 24-16 to a previously winless Tampa Bay team on Thursday night. Share your report card with us. <\/p>\n<p>False starts<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of final outcome,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/article\/dallas-cowboys-stats-record-bucs-preview-22462999.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">another unsettling start for the Cowboys defense<\/a>. On Tampa Bay\u2019s first possession, the Bucs\u2019 held the ball for 10:58 on the way to Bucky Irving\u2019s 5-yard TD catch from Jalon Daniels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>In terms of time of possession, it was the single longest touchdown drive against the Cowboys since Pro Football Reference started cataloging them in 2001. In that time, there had been only 16 touchdown drives in the league that were longer.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, Tampa Bay converted three third downs, got another on a third-down penalty by the Cowboys and converted on a 1st-and-20 situation thanks to yet another Cowboys\u2019 penalty. Both penalties came on defensive backs\u00a0DaRon Bland and Shavon Revel Jr., who couldn\u2019t hold coverage because the defensive front couldn\u2019t get to Daniels in anything close to a reasonable amount of time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Cowboys have allowed touchdowns on the opponents\u2019 first possession three times in five games this year. Because, at the very least, the Cowboys\u2019 defense makes any team capable of looking the equal, if not better than, the Cowboys\u2019 version.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Consider the third quarter, for your recommendation. The\u00a0Bucs proved capable of being methodical in the first half. In the second, they proved capable of lightning-quick scores.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It took them just two plays to go 86 yards after receiving the second-half kickoff, thanks to a 72-yard run by Irving. He was freed up when center Graham Barton prevented Jaishawn Barham from closing a hole. On the next possession, just five plays to go 85 yards, thanks to a 64-yard hookup between\u00a0Daniels and Tez Johnson, who was left uncovered when\u00a0Bland bit on a move inside and tumbled down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s an accomplishment not even Matt\u00a0Eberflus can be blamed for. The Cowboys hadn\u2019t given up multiple plays of 60 or more yards in a game since 2020 when Kyler Murray and the Cardinals put up three big-gainers against Mike Nolan and company.<\/p>\n<p>Irving finished the game with 165 yards rushing, a career high.<\/p>\n<p>It seems each week, the Cowboys defense finds new lows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of lows<\/p>\n<p>The Cowboys failed to intercept Daniels, who had thrown four picks in his first two NFL games, extending their streak of interception-free defense to eight games, dating to last season.<\/p>\n<p>It is the longest streak without an interception in team history.<\/p>\n<p>The Cowboys are also the 15th team since the\u00a0NFL-AFL merger to go without an interception through the first five games of a season. And here\u2019s the spoiler: Not surprisingly, most of those teams ended up missing the postseason. Only three of them \u2014 the Giants in 2022, Washington in 2024 and San Francisco in 2025 \u2014 advanced to the playoffs.
