{"id":460973,"date":"2026-10-09T08:08:08","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T08:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/460973\/"},"modified":"2026-10-09T08:08:08","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T08:08:08","slug":"san-antonio-preparing-for-possible-legal-fight-against-east-side-ice-warehouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/460973\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio preparing for possible legal fight against East Side ICE warehouse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 San Antonio councilmembers are gearing up for a fight to block the opening of an East Side warehouse as a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Though the exact timeline is unclear, that fight could come quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The San Antonio City Council voted 9-2 to ask the city-owned utilities, SAWS and CPS Energy, as well as certain city departments, to assess the potential impacts of a planned 1,500-person ICE processing facility off Loop 410.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cEvery step that I take is to ensure that ultimately it is next on the list to be removed as a potential detention facility,\u201d said Jalen McKee-Rodriguez (D2), who represents the area and had proposed the idea. \u201cWhat this action does today is arm us with information, data, resources, anything that can help inform a legal challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">A majority of the San Antonio City Council has been critical of the planned 1,500-person processing facility, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/07\/02\/east-side-detention-center-to-open-by-next-spring-ice-says-in-response-to-letter-from-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ICE has said<\/a> could open early next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">ICE bought the 640,000 square-foot warehouse for $66.1 million earlier this year. In late August, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/09\/01\/ice-awards-dollar173-million-contract-for-san-antonio-warehouse-conversion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">awarded a $17.3 million contract<\/a> to GardaWorld Federal Services LLC to renovate the East Side warehouse into a processing and detention facility and provide wraparound services to operate it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/award\/CONT_AWD_70CDCR26FR0000103_7012_N0002325D0032_9700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Federal contract records<\/a> show the contract has since grown to $61.8 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">After news of the GardaWorld contract broke, the city\u2019s development services director sent a letter on Sep. 9 to acting ICE Director David Venturella, stating the contract\u2019s award meant ICE now had to consult with the city and begin a required environmental review process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Though the department head asked ICE to provide written assurance by Sep. 30 that it will comply with legal requirements and coordinate efforts with the city and community, Jones <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2026\/10\/02\/mayor-gina-ortiz-jones-said-she-will-support-legal-action-to-stop-renovations-of-a-proposed-ice-detention-center-on-the\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said last week <\/a>the city hadn\u2019t received a response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cI support legal action to halt all activities in light of the lack of transparency and in light, frankly, of the very concerning reports that we\u2019ve seen at other facilities, some of that you heard even here today,\u201d she told reporters Thursday. \u201cSo, I know, again, the city attorney is reviewing those options, and we expect an update here very, very shortly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Jones said pursuing legal action wouldn\u2019t require a council vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cI\u2019ll just say again, many of my colleagues, we\u2019ve all expressed our support to move quickly. So you\u2019ll get an update shortly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The council is scheduled to discuss another resolution on Oct. 15 \u201cto take action, support or coordinate in community efforts to prevent an ICE detention facility from being located in the urban core of the City of San Antonio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cMy hope is that by that meeting, we will have already taken legal action,\u201d McKee-Rodriguez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The council\u2019s two conservative members, Misty Spears (D9) and Marc Whyte (D10), voted against Thursday\u2019s resolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cIf we end up filing a lawsuit, that\u2019s going to be a further waste of money,\u201d Whyte said. \u201cAnd again, why?
