Terry Wilson wants to ensure that college coursework leads somewhere \u2014 a credential, a better-paying job, greater research opportunities at Texas universities.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson, a Georgetown Republican, earned our recommendation for a sixth term with those types of bipartisan efforts to strengthen higher education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to have an education system that equates to\u00a0credentialing that leads to the American dream and the middle class,\u201d said Wilson, a retired Army colonel representing Texas House District 20 in western Williamson County. \u201cAnd we have done a tremendous amount of work in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But we share many of Wilson\u2019s priorities to improve K-12 education, including raising teacher pay, giving teachers greater support in student disciplinary situations, and hiring more guidance and mental health counselors.<\/p>\n<p>It is also clear that Wilson values\u00a0bipartisanship. He noted the Democratic support he garnered for <a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/BillLookup\/History.aspx?LegSess=89R&amp;Bill=HB127\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HB 127<\/a>, protecting Texas research universities from foreign adversaries, made the bill better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest honor I get is when a member from another party comes and says, \u2018Hey, I know this isn\u2019t anything that you can vote for, but I value your opinion. Will you help me make it better?\u2019\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsidering the political environment we&#8217;re in,\u201d he added, \u201cI think we&#8217;re all starving for the days when Tip O&#8217;Neill and Ronald Reagan used to work together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wilson faces a challenge from Democrat\u00a0Matthias-Jonah Early, an earnest first-time candidate who recently graduated from the University of Texas-Arlington. We appreciate Early\u2019s commitment to improving access to health care and other social safety net programs.<\/p>\n<p>But District 20 residents have a legislator who has shown he can deliver meaningful results while working across party lines. We recommend Wilson for another term.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"State Rep.
