The decision ends years of debate over the legacy of John James Audubon, the famed bird illustrator and naturalist who also enslaved people and opposed abolition.

“This topic was a contentious one that the board struggled with for several years,” board president Shelia Hargis wrote in the announcement. She said the debate spanned three board presidents, multiple executive directors and members with sharply opposing views.

For Travis Audubon, the decision came down to more than its controversial namesake. The board also considered whether the name was helping or hindering its efforts to attract new members, reach diverse communities and promote bird conservation.

“We need to grow and diversify the organization, not just to grow and not just to say we are diverse, but because we need everyone actively engaged in our efforts to save birds and bird habitat,” Hargis wrote.

A membership survey showed that most respondents favored keeping the name. Of the 512 members who participated, representing approximately a quarter of the organization’s membership, 63 percent supported retaining it, 24 percent wanted a change and 12 percent had no preference.

Those favoring a change cited Audubon’s history of slavery and racism, concerns about inclusivity and confusion over what the organization actually does. Some also argued that the name Travis Audubon fails to reflect its reach beyond Travis County.

“Change the name now or end up in the dust bin of history,” one respondent warned.

Others argued that Audubon has become synonymous with bird conservation, making it a valuable brand. They also raised concerns about rebranding costs and potentially confusing longtime supporters.

Hargis acknowledged that the name carries different meanings depending on whom you ask. While experienced birders typically associate Audubon with conservation, newcomers might not recognize the name at all.

She said the board also weighed the organization’s current success, noting that membership is growing, finances are healthy and birding classes and field trips frequently have wait lists.

An earlier membership survey in 2025 found that just 6 percent of respondents ranked resolving the organization’s naming question among their top three priorities.

“The board voted unanimously to retain our name, but we are very clear that there is still much work to be done to engage more of our community,” Hargis wrote.

For those unhappy with the decision, Hargis had a message: “For those who are disappointed by our decision, please know that your views are respected and were considered. I hope you continue to be part of our Travis Audubon family.”

Travis Audubon announced Wednesday that it will retain the name Travis Audubon Society, following a unanimous Sept. 24…

[11
132,134,133,1836,2299,1704,85744
post-461183","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-austin","tag-austin","tag-austin-headlines","tag-austin-news","tag-chronnews","tag-chronscience","tag-chronstaff","tag-chrontexas
["GET
