{"id":461985,"date":"2026-10-10T07:56:14","date_gmt":"2026-10-10T07:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/461985\/"},"modified":"2026-10-10T07:56:14","modified_gmt":"2026-10-10T07:56:14","slug":"deed-theft-how-houston-homeowners-can-protect-their-property","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/461985\/","title":{"rendered":"Deed theft: How Houston homeowners can protect their property"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">HOUSTON \u2013 Houston area homeowners are being warned about deed theft, a form of property fraud that can put their homes and generational wealth at risk. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cThis is actual home theft,\u201d Kaiman said. \u201cIt\u2019s outright home theft.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin says fraudulent filings can allow criminals to claim ownership of property sometimes without the homeowner even realizing it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Kamin tells KPRC 2, her office has filed two major civil lawsuits against nine people accused of working together to fraudulently claim properties. Investigations began after homeowners reported suspicious activity, eventually uncovering additional properties and families potentially affected by the schemes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">In some cases, Kamin says, criminals forge notarized documents by taking a notary\u2019s signature page and attaching it to fraudulent property records before filing them with the county.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cFirst and foremost, to anybody that is brazen enough to try to steal a home from a resident here in Harris County, we are coming for you, and we need the public\u2019s help,\u201d said Kamin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The consequences can be devastating, leaving victims facing costly legal fees, time away from work and the stress of trying to reclaim their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/news\/local\/2026\/10\/07\/houston-churches-could-help-turn-underused-land-into-thousands-of-affordable-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/news\/local\/2026\/10\/07\/houston-churches-could-help-turn-underused-land-into-thousands-of-affordable-homes\/\">Houston churches could help turn underused land into thousands of affordable homes<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">HOW TO SPOT DEED FRAUD:<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Kamin urges homeowners to regularly check their property records rather than waiting for a problem to surface.<\/p>\n<p>Check your property information: Visit the Harris County Appraisal District\u2019s website at <a href=\"https:\/\/hcad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hcad.org<\/a> and search your address to find your property\u2019s legal description.Review county records: Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cclerk.hctx.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Harris County Clerk\u2019s website<\/a> to search property records using that legal description. Look for unfamiliar or suspicious filings.Report suspicious activity: Visit the Harris County Attorney\u2019s website at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harriscountytx.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">harriscountytx.gov<\/a> and look for the \u201cStay Scam Free\u201d section to report suspected fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Keep estate documents updated: Kaiman also recommends having a clear, up-to-date will, particularly for families managing property after a loved one\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">If you suspect someone is attempting to steal your property, Kamin advises contacting an attorney promptly and reporting the activity to her office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019re talking about what they have worked so hard to invest into to build a foundation for their children, their grandchildren to stand on. We\u2019re talking about generational wealth that is being stolen, on top of the legal fees, on top of the time it takes to deal with this, to take time off of work to navigate something so stressful and painful,\u201d said Kamin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">BUYERS AND RENTERS CAN ALSO BE VICTIMS: <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Deed theft can extend beyond homeowners. Criminals may attempt to sell or rent a property they do not legally own, leaving unsuspecting buyers and renters at risk of losing money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Kamin warns people to be cautious of deals that seem unusually cheap, requests for cash and sellers or landlords who pressure them to move quickly through a transaction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cNobody is immune to it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Kamin says her office is working with law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue cases and is advocating for stronger protections for property owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">\u201cWe need everyone\u2019s help.
