Will it feel like fall?

Huzzah! The Texas Renaissance Festival begins its 2026 season this weekend, but visitors heading to Todd Mission should plan for sunshine and warm temperatures rather than a crisp fall day.

Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high near 88 degrees at the festival grounds and a northeast breeze around 5 to 10 mph. Sunday should be similarly warm, with highs near 90. Rain is not expected to be a major concern for opening weekend.

That’s good news for outdoor plans, but hours in the sun can still take a toll, especially for visitors wearing layered or heavy costumes. Those outfits can make it harder for the body to cool itself, and a breeze may not provide much relief if you’re walking around in direct sunlight.

After a hot Houston summer, heat safety may not be top of mind in October. But temperatures near 90 degrees and ornate costumes that may trap heat are good reasons to plan for water breaks and cooling spots.

Listen to your body and take breaks in shaded areas or shops that have air conditioning if you begin to feel the heat getting to you. Alcohol can contribute to dehydration, so consider alternating alcoholic drinks with water. A hat and sunscreen can help limit sun exposure, even if they need to fit around your costume.

Watch for signs of heat illness, including heavy sweating, headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea or muscle cramps. If you or someone in your group feels faint or unwell, stop walking, move to a cooler place and get help from festival staff. Confusion or fainting can signal a medical emergency.

The festival is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Visitors who plan to stay through the afternoon should build in breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned space, if available.

With warm temperatures and plenty of time outdoors, a few extra items can make the day more comfortable:

The warm, sunny pattern will extend beyond the festival grounds.

Houston can expect highs in the upper 80s to low 90s through the weekend, with lower humidity than the area experienced during much of summer. While a stray shower cannot completely be ruled out along the coast, most areas will stay dry.

A larger change may arrive next week, when a cold front could bring cooler temperatures to Southeast Texas. The timing and strength remain uncertain, but long-range forecast models suggest highs could fall into the 70s, with lows in the 60s. That would offer a more noticeable taste of fall after the festival’s warm opening weekend.

Huzzah!
