Houston’s first Affordable Art Fair is bringing thousands of original works downtown with a goal of making the art appreciation feel less intimidating.<\/p>\n

The fair opens at the George R. Brown Convention Center, bringing 55 galleries, more than 350 artists and thousands of works to downtown Houston from Oct. 15-18. Prices range from $100 to $12,000, which may not sound cheap, but fair director Cori Teague said that is the point: affordable compared with the wider art market, not disposable wall decor.<\/p>\n

“Affordable to us is affordable in the greater art world,” Teague said. “So when you’re talking about investing into a $98 million [Jean-Michel] Basquiat, yeah, we’re the affordable side of that world.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We are kind of the gateway into the art world,” Teague said. “Yes, we want established collectors, but we also want new collectors.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why does art cost so much?<\/p>\n
For anyone who has ever looked at a painting and wondered why one piece costs $400 and another costs $4,000, Teague said pricing is usually less mysterious than people think. At this level of the market, she said, many artists price work by size, time, consistency and where they are in their careers.<\/p>\n
“With pricing, generally, how it works is you should be doing it at a price per inch on the canvas if you’re working with a canvas or a print,” Teague said.<\/p>\n

She also pushed back on one of the most common reactions people have to contemporary art.<\/p>\n
“My favorite misinterpretation is: I can do that,” Teague said. “It drives me insane.”<\/p>\n
Houston’s art scene<\/p>\n
Houston is not exactly starting from scratch as an art city, which is part of why Teague said this fair feels different from Austin. She described Austin as a market with newer collectors and more new money, while Houston already has a deeper art scene.<\/p>\n

“With Houston, it’s just so much more established,” Teague said. “And with the art scene that’s already there, there’s so much more knowledge behind it.”<\/p>\n

Works will be priced from $100 to $12,000 and a focus on making art more approachable.<\/p>\n

The fair will also lean into Houston’s international feel. Teague said she is especially excited about the range of cultures represented, including galleries showing artists from Mexico and Guatemala, along with a gallery traveling from Japan.<\/p>\n
“It’s just there’s so many different cultures that are being shown in Houston,” Teague said. “And that’s just something that’s been really different from our Austin Fair.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

What to know before you go<\/p>\n
The event will include a private view Thursday night, general admission Friday through Sunday and family hours on Saturday and Sunday, according to the fair. Teague said the George R. Brown space gave organizers room to build out installations, VIP areas and different gallery experiences instead of just rows of booths.\u00a0<\/p>\n
