{"id":462399,"date":"2026-10-10T19:58:09","date_gmt":"2026-10-10T19:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/462399\/"},"modified":"2026-10-10T19:58:09","modified_gmt":"2026-10-10T19:58:09","slug":"city-panel-approves-plans-for-downtown-podcasting-studio-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/462399\/","title":{"rendered":"City panel approves plans for downtown podcasting studio, park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city\u2019s Historic and Design Review Commission has approved a request from the City of San Antonio to build a podcasting studio behind the Plaza de Armas Building downtown.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Calder Alley \u201cSecret Garden\u201d TVSA project is envisioned as an outdoor podcast studio \u2014 a production and community space that will support TVSA programming, interviews, events and other public-facing content, a city spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sa.gov\/Directory\/Departments\/CE\/TVSA\/Public\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">TVSA Public<\/a> is the city\u2019s public access television channel which offers residents a place to create, produce and share non-commercial, educational or entertainment shows at no cost.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans for the project at 115 Plaza de Armas call for transforming a former surface parking lot and urban \u201cheat island\u201d into a small pocket park between the historic structures near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spanishgovernorspalace.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Spanish Governor\u2019s Palace<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The studio is planned as a small structure of brick veneer, aluminum clad wood windows, cast stone window sills, metal screening and a steel entrance canopy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A \u201cliving\u201d wall of plants and metal screening will be installed around an existing structure and utility screening on the southwest corner, according to the application.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The site can be accessed from either Dolorosa or West Commerce streets at Calder Alley and the San Pedro Creek Culture Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funding for the project comes from the Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) Fund, a special revenue account that collects cable franchise fees and is separate from the city\u2019s general fund. The funds can be spent only on capital and infrastructure costs for television channel programming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the project in the design and regulatory approval phase, actual costs and a construction timeline are not yet known, the spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TVSA is currently located within the Plaza de Armas Building behind City Hall and near to the Spanish Governor\u2019s Palace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"558\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/hdrc_renderinging2_plazadearmas.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5456104\"  \/>The Historic Design and Review Commission has approved the construction of a new podcast studio in the Military Plaza. Credit: Courtesy \/ City of San Antonio<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plaza de Armas, or Military Plaza, is a national historic district and city historic district.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plaza is where the military authorities established the presidio in 1722 to defend the region, according to the National Register of Historic Places entry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers from the presidio acted as escorts for officials and supply trains traveling along El Camino Real de los Tejas, and protected residents at the nearby missions. The military plaza served as a training ground and symbol of Spain\u2019s power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The building housed the interim governor of Texas from 1816-17, and later came to be known as the Spanish Governor\u2019s Palace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also at Wednesday\u2019s HDRC meeting, commissioners approved plans for <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/river-north-retail-site-subzone-for-major-public-improvements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">McCombs Enterprises\u2019 retail project<\/a> on Jones Avenue, renovations to Houston Street as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/remodeled-paseo-alamo-plaza-river-walk-now-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Alamo Plan<\/a> and a request by Pearl developer Oxbow to <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/pearl-san-antonio-expansion-shops-raze-vacant-buildings-parking-lot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">demolish a building<\/a> to make way for new retail structures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two commissioners found fault with Oxbow\u2019s request to demolish the industrial building. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irby Hightower of Alamo Architects explained that it\u2019s \u201ctoo low, too deep, too separated from the natural grade\u201d of the sidewalks, he said. \u201cAfter you make all those renovations, there\u2019s really not much left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite that, Commissioner Isabel Garcia said she understood the reasons but that the architects should \u201crise to the occasion of a challenge,\u201d and not tear down the building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure passed with commissioners voting 7-2 to approve the request.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The city\u2019s Historic and Design Review Commission has approved a request from the City of San Antonio to&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":462400,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[157894,76231,157895,742,157896,82,84,83,125821,92,157897,3028,6251],"class_list":["post-462399","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-antonio","tag-calder-alley","tag-historic-and-design-review-commission","tag-oxbow","tag-pearl","tag-plaza-de-armas","tag-san-antonio","tag-san-antonio-headlines","tag-san-antonio-news","tag-spanish-governors-palace","tag-top-story","tag-tvsa-public","tag-typedaily","tag-wc-500-750"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/462399","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=462399"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/462399\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/462400"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=462399"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=462399"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=462399"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
