Austin-based indie-electronic duo, drummer Jaelyn Valero and producer Stefan Barraza, made their Austin City Limits Music Festival debut on Friday, Oct. 9 on the Tito\u2019s Stage. Valero, who was born and raised in Austin, met Barraza, the two producing and releasing music ever since \u2013 most recently Raw Cranium released in January. The Daily Texan sat down with the pair fresh off their first gig at ACL to discuss their experience.<\/p>\n
The Daily Texan: What was that experience like being up on stage, playing at ACL?<\/p>\n
Stefan Barraza: It was years of everything, culminating into a moment and it really felt like the most validating thing in the world.<\/p>\n
Jaelyn Valero: I think the best thing I just heard right now is someone\u2019s friend said to them during our set, \u201cThis is so beautiful, I have to call my family right now and tell them I love them, and that I have to cry.\u201d Oh my god, that\u2019s the only thing I\u2019ve ever needed to hear after a show.<\/p>\n
DT: What has the experience been like getting to know the Austin music scene?<\/p>\n
SB: Meeting Jaelyn literally changed my life and the trajectory of my life as an individual. This community (and) the way I have been embraced and loved and the way that we\u2019ve been embraced and loved as a unit, the way that we are so unconditionally supported with no expectation of giving anything back \u2026 is the most fulfilling thing for me. The best way I could really put it is I forget that I\u2019m not from Austin sometimes.<\/p>\n
DT: What\u2019s the story of how you guys met and how you started making music?<\/p>\n
SB: It\u2019s a little complicated. Long story short, Jae and I are a part of this experiment. We don\u2019t really even know too much about it \u2026 We were made in labs, and they separated us right at birth. They wanted to see if we\u2019d make our way back to each other, and luckily we did. When we did, the first thing we said to each other was, \u201cLet\u2019s start a band,\u201d \u2026 Then we (said) \u201cJinx, you owe me a drumstick\u201d \u2026We said that at the same time, and then we went, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s start a band.\u201d We decided to do it here in Austin.<\/p>\n
DT: How do you think your own experience in music connects to the audiences you play for?<\/p>\n
JV: I feel so indebted to the Austin community, and I really attribute the person I am today to growing up in Austin and the cultural experience here.
