In a city as big as Austin with endless places to eat, how do you know which ones are truly worth your appetite? With so many choices around every corner, finding the perfect place to satisfy your hunger can be an adventure of its own. I found myself at the doorsteps of this very adventure my first night as a freshman.

Although the dining hall was open, I felt almost obligated to splurge a little and treat myself on move-in night. With my roommate by my side, we headed out for our first dinner in a brand-new city. A variety of options at hand, I decided to tackle this adventure with a self-created goal: find a restaurant with a joyous atmosphere that could soothe my homesick emotions. Coming from San Antonio, I always felt like I knew good food, but Austin was new territory. I knew I would have to explore the city, try new places and eventually find a favorite spot to call my own. Fast-forward three weeks, and I can now proudly call myself a true Austin local. With a vast experience under my belt, if you asked this newly seasoned Austinite where you should eat, 1618 Asian Fusion would be the first place out of my mouth.

1618 Asian Fusion is Pan-Asian cuisine located on the South side of Austin along East Riverside Drive. The restaurant was founded in October 2019 by husband and wife duo Kevin Le and Lynn Tran. The couple, who had previously owned 888 Pan Asian Restaurant, made the adjustment from a casual dining restaurant into a high-elevated culinary concept. This was a major jump for the two, but nonetheless would pay off to become an Austin staple.

1618 Asian Fusion offers a wide variety of dishes that seamlessly blend Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese and other Southeast Asian flavors. Some of the restaurant’s signature dishes include the whole peking duck, imperial crispy redfish and grilled duck skewers. If duck isn’t exactly your idea of being “nourished deliciously,” don’t worry, there are plenty of other dishes worth exploring.

The egg noodle stir fry and the gyoza with a crispy skirt as well as the pad thai. (Leena Garcia / Hilltop Views)

For my first visit, I tried the egg noodle stir-fry and the gyoza, also known as potstickers, served with a crispy skirt. My roommate ordered pad thai, a stir-fried noodle dish made with eggs, tofu and your choice of shrimp or meat. Since shrimp and stir-fried noodles are already two of my favorites, it did not take long for my attention to wander across the table. We finished off this meal with my new recommendation of dessert, the mango sticky rice, a delicacy that is made with sweet glutinous rice, rich coconut milk, sugar, salt and fresh ripe mango.

Not only did 1618 Asian Fusion impress me with its vibrant presentation, theatrical desserts, and delicious cuisine, but plenty of other diners seem to agree. With an impressive 4.8 out of 5 stars across thousands of reviews, the restaurant has certainly earned its reputation.

Beyond the food and presentation, 1618 Asian Fusion was simply a place that made me happy to be there. To me, the simplest measure of good customer service is whether you leave feeling better than when you arrived. Sitting there enjoying a meal with my roommate, I found a small sense of peace and comfort that reminded me of home. The welcoming atmosphere and genuine kindness of our servers made the experience feel special. For a freshman still trying to find her place in a brand new city, sometimes a good meal and a little feeling of home are exactly what you need.

[11
132,134,133
post-462529","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-austin","tag-austin","tag-austin-headlines","tag-austin-news
["GET
