On the next play, with 12 seconds remaining, Mateer hit Sategna along the opposite sideline for a 20-yard gain. The last interception for a touchdown by a Sooner had been by younger brother <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/high-school-sports\/football\/2023\/08\/24\/denton-guyer-three-star-cornerback-eli-bowen-commits-to-oklahoma\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Eli Bowen<\/a> last November against Alabama.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Penal colony<\/p>\n<p>Texas\u2019 defense gave Oklahoma life in the second half with significant penalty mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>On Oklahoma\u2019s game-tying 47-yard TD drive, two costly Texas penalties accounted for nearly half of the Sooners\u2019 yardage. The most egregious of those: A roughing-the-passer call on linebacker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/article\/texas-puts-4-players-on-preseason-ap-all-america-22393077.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Rasheem Biles<\/a> when he leaped into Isaiah Sategna, who was trying to throw the second half of a double pass. The was woefully off-target and intercepted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/texas-longhorns\/2024\/12\/06\/texas-has-nations-top-recruiting-class-after-landing-elite-defensive-lineman-from-georgia\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Kade Phillips<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the same drive, Phillips climbed Sategna\u2019s back in the Texas end zone to break up a third-and-goal pass. The pass interference call moved the ball to the 2-yard line and gave Oklahoma a new set of downs. For the second straight game, the Longhorns allowed a punt attempt to turn into an opponent\u2019s touchdown. Texas\u2019 protection completely broke down on a second-quarter kick from its own end zone, allowing a swarm of Sooners to descend upon Mac Chiumento. Danny Okoye, coming straight up the middle, lunged to smother the kick and Dakoda Fields recovered it in the back of the end zone.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks ago, the problem was on a return. On another kick from deep in Texas territory, Tennessee\u2019s Qua Moss broke to the right and went 57 yards untouched for a touchdown.<\/p>\n<p>Texas also entered the day ranked 120th of 138 FBS schools in punt return defense, allowing an average of 14.8 yards per punt return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>It was the first blocked punt for a touchdown by the Sooners since 2019 against West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>Shaky starts<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s put it this way, if you got stuck in the insanely long Fletcher\u2019s stands and were late to your seats, you didn\u2019t miss much. The first quarter was not a classic. The kickoff was delayed due to missing pylons. Once they were found, the teams combined for one first down, a pair of timeouts and a pair of sacks. The first 15 minutes felt like they lasted two hours. There was zero flow to the game.<\/p>\n<p>Oklahoma managed 15 yards on five possessions. Texas scored the quarter\u2019s only points on a one-play, 41-yard strike from Arch Manning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/texas-longhorns\/2026\/01\/11\/cam-coleman-texas-longhorns-transfer-portal-auburn-tigers-things-to-know\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Cam Coleman<\/a>. Manning dropped back, then rolled to his left when the pocket started to collapse to find his receiver wide open.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this
