{"id":462857,"date":"2026-10-11T09:18:11","date_gmt":"2026-10-11T09:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/462857\/"},"modified":"2026-10-11T09:18:11","modified_gmt":"2026-10-11T09:18:11","slug":"texas-football-loss-to-oklahoma-part-of-alarming-trend-for-longhorns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/462857\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas football: Loss to Oklahoma part of alarming trend for Longhorns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img alt=\"Texas\u2019 offensive struggles in losing to Oklahoma raise questions about Steve Sarkisian\u2019s play-calling and the Longhorns\u2019 chances of making a playoff run.\" loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:3 \/ 2\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Texas\u2019 offensive struggles in losing to Oklahoma raise questions about Steve Sarkisian\u2019s play-calling and the Longhorns\u2019 chances of making a playoff run.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Diggins\/Austin American-Statesman<\/p>\n<p>DALLAS\u00a0\u2014 Technically, the scoreboard might disagree, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Texas<\/a> lost to Oklahoma 24-27 late Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>That may come across as a little backward, but that was the direction the burnt orange took for much of this game and perhaps the path it\u2019s headed down from here on out, barring an amazing offensive turnaround the next seven games.<\/p>\n<p>Texas sure looked like a team going nowhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Yes, OU was officially the winner when Lou Groza Award winner Tate Sandell calmly booted a walk-off, 47-yard field goal in the final seconds to help the spiraling but inspired Sooners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/article\/texas-football-oklahoma-upset-22423865.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">shock the No. 1-ranked Longhorns 27-24<\/a> before 92,100 at a sun-drenched Cotton Bowl. It marked OU\u2019s first win over a top-ranked team since beating Missouri in 2007 and first over a No. 1 Longhorn team in six tries.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, Brent Venables\u2019 3-2 flawed team snapped a two-game losing streak to Texas and resurrected its season after it was given up for dead, while the 4-1 Longhorns (1-1 in SEC play) fell for the first time this year with one of the ugliest, offensive performances in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/article\/steve-sarkisian-texas-football-reputation-22414597.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">the Steve Sarkisian era<\/a>. Unfortunately, that\u2019s becoming an alarming trend because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/article\/texas-florida-football-recap-21079180.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">a loss to an unranked Florida team<\/a> last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/article\/texas-bowl-game-michigan-citrus-21229062.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">kept Texas out of the playoffs<\/a> and could again this time.<\/p>\n<p>Listed as a touchdown favorite, Texas lost this game in every way imaginable.<\/p>\n<p>The Sooners scored 14 of their points off a blocked punt and recovery in the end zone and a dazzling, 42-yard interception return by safety Peyton Bowen, Arch Manning\u2019s first pick-six in his career and one of two critical interceptions in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Besides that, not much. But not much else was necessary since Texas was getting no cheapies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCredit to Oklahoma,\u201d Sarkisian said. \u201cThey hung around and made the plays they needed to win. For us, there\u2019s a level of disappointment, a level of anger and frustration for things we have to get fixed, but also a level of optimism. We\u2019ve got a long season to go. We\u2019ve got a good football team, so we\u2019re not dead. We\u2019re going to be OK. We\u2019ll get well and get back up off the mat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday it was as if the Longhorns were pinned to the mat. It betrayed its awesome defense, which held OU to 1 yard rushing in the first half for an 0.1-yard average and 83 in the game. And, despite three terrific touchdown passes from Manning to Cam Coleman, Ryan Wingo and Jermaine Bishop Jr., it scored only a touchdown in the second half.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Longhorns were undone with three series that went three and out (seven for the game) and the two Manning picks in the last eight drives. They\u2019ve had a distressing 13 three-and-out possessions in their past two games.<\/p>\n<p>All these weapons, all this playmaking firepower, and the team still fizzles. As for Manning, he\u2019s looking like just a guy, a seasoned quarterback who plays well at times but has trouble processing a pass rush consistently and finding receivers under pressure and doesn\u2019t look strong under duress.<\/p>\n<p>As he so often does, he completed only 61% of his throws, connecting on 19 of 31 for 260 touchdowns. But he\u2019s not keeping enough drives alive or making enough big plays in crunch time like so many other elite quarterbacks in college football. For every big moments of spectacular performances <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/article\/arch-manning-ted-cruz-ohio-state-texas-bo-french-22432577.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">like the fourth quarter against Ohio State<\/a> there are far too many letdowns like Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>His pick-six was a killer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I was trying to extend a play,\u201d Manning said. \u201cCan\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019d be wrong to put all of this at his feet.<\/p>\n<p>Once more, Texas was its own worst enemy, drawing constant penalties and finishing with eight for 61 yards.<\/p>\n<p>They jumped offsides twice in a span of three plays. A questionable pass interference against Kade Phillips in the end zone let to Lloyd Avant\u2019s 2-yard touchdown run to start the fourth quarter and tie the game at 17-all. A roughing-the-passer call against linebacker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/article\/texas-rasheem-biles-profile-22387815.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Rasheem Biles<\/a>, who hit receiver Isaiah Sategna III\u00a0\u2014 who was throwing a pass on a trick play\u00a0\u2014 negated a Texas interception earlier in that scoring drive.<\/p>\n<p>The special teams also bordered on disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Texas had a punt blocked for a touchdown, had its first kickoff go out of bounds, had no running room for punt returner\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/article\/ryan-niblett-texas-football-22380070.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Ryan\u00a0Niblett<\/a> and Gianni Spetic missed his 53-yard field goal try in the final two minutes. That in itself was a huge admission by Sarkisian that even he knows his offense isn\u2019t very good, given he chose the kick over a fourth-and-2 play. It was probably the right decision, simply because this offensive line can\u2019t block well enough to assure a 2-yard run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought long and hard about it,\u201d Sarkisian said of the Memphis kicker, who has six 50-yarders in his career but pushed his attempt wide right. \u201cHe\u2019s a heckuva kicker. I have a ton of faith in Gianni. I went round and round about it trying to figure it out, but I felt like that was the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was more Cotton Bowl clunker than classic.<\/p>\n<p>Quite simply, Texas got exposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe definitely beat ourselves,\u201d Longhorn edge rusher Colin Simmons said. \u201cOnly Texas can beat Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No doubt, Texas sure played its part, but that also unfairly minimizes the impact of a ferocious OU defense and others like Danny Okaye and his blocked punt.<\/p>\n<p>That unit, led by linebacker Owen Heinecke and Bowen crumpled the Longhorns at nearly every turn. Sandell was clutch. Even harassed OU quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/article\/oklahoma-john-mateer-sec-football-media-days-22298444.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">John Mateer<\/a>, who was unremarkable in leading an offense to a paltry 238 yards, didn\u2019t have a turnover and found his magnificent receiver Sategna for two critical completions of 13 and 20 yards against Texas\u2019 terrific cornerback Graceson Littleton to set up the winning kick.<\/p>\n<p>But Sarkisian insists it\u2019s all fixable.<\/p>\n<p>Would he consider relinquishing play-calling?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot a chance,\u201d he said. \u201cWe got to play better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Would he re-evaluate Jeff Banks, his special teams coordinator?<\/p>\n<p>The questions are only getting harder. The answers?
