As a member of the minority party, state Rep. John\u00a0Bucy III has learned to count the bills he blocks among his most significant accomplishments at the Texas Capitol.<\/p>\n

For instance, last session he worked to kill a bill that would have required proof of citizenship to vote<\/a> \u2014 a measure that\u2019s far more likely to disenfranchise voters who don\u2019t have their\u00a0birth certificate handy than to catch noncitizens trying to vote. Bucy, an Austin Democrat,\u00a0said it \u201cwould have been one of the most atrocious bills we would have passed in a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

A savvy legislator and defender of voting rights, Bucy earns our recommendation for a fifth term representing Texas House District 136, which covers most of Round Rock plus parts of Northwest Austin and Cedar Park.<\/p>\n

Bucy also worked to stymie bills that sought to derail Austin\u2019s Project Connect.<\/a> His top priority for Round Rock is blocking any\u00a0legislation that would affect the significant sales tax revenue the city receives from Dell computer sales.<\/p>\n

But Bucy isn\u2019t all defense. He told us he learned from his Republican grandfather, who worked as treasurer on his first state House campaign, \u201chow to disagree in a way that you could still maintain relationships and friendships.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Republican challenger Theodore\u00a0Schramm is a stay-at-home dad from Round Rock whose website says he is running on a platform prioritizing education, health care and property tax relief.\u00a0Schramm did not meet with us.<\/p>\n

Bucy has proven to be an effective advocate for the residents of Texas House District 136.
