Lola Young was candid about her struggles with addiction during a Bonus Tracks interview with Brené Brown at the Austin City Limits Music Festival on Saturday. The conversation came before Young’s 6:30 p.m. ACL Fest Weekend 2 performance, one day after she taped an episode of the Austin City Limits television show.

“We need to figure things out in silence,” Young said. “We need to sit with ourselves in silence. With everything at our fingertips nowadays, everything’s so accessible. We never get time to just be away from things and away from our f— crazy a— emotions and our crazy a— brains and the fact that we are all people with trauma and with pain.”

Young has spoken candidly about her struggles with substance abuse and mental health, most notably her trip to rehab when her hit “Messy” was blowing up in 2024. She also stepped away to focus on her sobriety in late 2025, following an onstage collapse at the All Thing Go Music Festival in New York that September.

“To step away for a second and say that this is something I need to do for once in my life, that’s a really powerful, big move,” Young said. “I was struggling, as I’ve mentioned a million times before, and we all struggle. It’s okay to struggle and to say I need space.”

“When you get to a still place, is that where you tap into your amazing creativity?” Brown asked.

“One million percent,” Young said. “The creativity stems from silence and the silence stems from creativity.

“I have complete and utter control — I’m creating songs that are mine and will forever be mine and that will potentially be millions of other people’s.”

Brown said she feels that Young’s work became “even more soulful” following her hiatus.

“It’s so beautiful that you have to walk from the noise and the s— through a very difficult tunnel to get to the silence. That’s where the love lives, that’s where the creativity lives,” Brown said.

Young reflected on her 2025 song, “From Down Here.” The track is about the singer’s addiction recovery following a period of burnout and mental health struggles.

“Even in the period that I’m in now, learning so much through just time and acceptance, the song feels different because I feel happier,” Young said. “Songs change, and the meaning of that one is very acute to the time in my life.”

Lola Young was candid about her struggles with addiction during a Bonus Tracks interview with Brené Brown at…

[11
132,134,133
post-462957","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-austin","tag-austin","tag-austin-headlines","tag-austin-news
["GET
