A trip to one of Texas’s most\u00a0popular coastal destinations<\/a> could soon cost more.<\/p>\n That\u2019s because officials on South Padre Island<\/a>, in the Rio Grande Valley<\/a>, are weighing a recommendation to charge for parking after seasonal traffic highs have, in recent years, begun to shift to more year-round, high-density usage.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve heard from several people that, yes, while we have some slow days, we no longer have really slow seasons,\u201d Jon\u00a0Forster, a parking and mobility planner with Fishbeck, said to the South Padre Island City Council during a public workshop on Monday, October 5.<\/p>\n South Padre Island hired the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based engineering consulting firm last November to analyze the city\u2019s parking infrastructure \u2014 or lack thereof.\u00a0Over the last year, Forster and the company have made multiple trips to study parking along city streets, beach access points,\u00a0around popular businesses<\/a>, and surrounding major public infrastructure features, like the\u00a0South Padre Island Convention Center<\/a> and the South Padre Island Visitors Center. Fishbeck found that South Padre Island doesn\u2019t have enough spaces to meet demand, which could hurt\u00a0the city\u2019s bottom line.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you don\u2019t have enough, at some point, you will cap your economic activity,\u201d\u00a0Forster said during a presentation of Fishbeck\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n On-street parking is shown in a residential area of South Padre Island. The image was included as part of an October 5, 2026 city council presentation on future parking needs at the popular tourist destination.<\/p>\n Courtesy City of South Padre Island<\/p>\n Consultant recommends charging for parking on South Padre Island<\/p>\n While\u00a0Forster provided several options city leaders could consider, including doing nothing, his ultimate recommendation was to charge for parking.<\/p>\n The consultant outlined several scenarios, including charging a premium for spots closer to the beach, hourly parking fees in high-traffic areas, discounted rates for permanent South Padre Island residents, and different rates by time of year.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n He also suggested the city accelerate its plan to install curbs along streets that don\u2019t currently have them, or build a parking garage that can accommodate hundreds of vehicles. But each option comes with a cost, from hiring and paying staff to enforce the fees, to the price of building infrastructure, which could run as high as $45,000 to $60,000 per space for a parking garage, Forster said.<\/p>\n A crowded parking lot in the Arts and Entertainment District on the southern end of South Padre Island. The image was included as part of an October 5, 2026 city council presentation on future parking needs at the popular tourist destination.<\/p>\n Courtesy City of South Padre Island<\/p>\n Where is parking insufficient on South Padre Island?<\/p>\n Fishbeck identified three main areas where parking is insufficient inside the\u00a0South Padre Island<\/a> city limits: On the side streets along two of the city\u2019s main thoroughfares, Laguna and Gulf boulevards, adjacent to the city\u2019s pedestrian-only beach access points, and on the south side of the city within the bustling Arts and Entertainment District.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Three main thoroughfares run north-south across the city. Parking is prohibited along Padre Boulevard, the divided highway that serves as the city\u2019s main street. But on either side of Padre Boulevard, parking is allowed along Laguna and Gulf boulevards and the side streets that branch off them\u2014so long as there is a curb. And parking on certain portions of those streets is restricted to South Padre Island residents only.<\/p>\n The city also maintains nearly two dozen pedestrian-only beach accesses. State law\u00a0<\/a>requires<\/a> local governments to\u00a0provide at least one parking space per 15 linear feet of beach to compensate for closing the beach to cars. The Texas General Land Office further requires<\/a> that those spaces be located \u201cdirectly adjacent to the beach,\u201d in part, to remain as accessible as possible for people with disabilities. South Padre Island is about 300 spaces short of those requirements,\u00a0Forster said.<\/p>\n And finally, in the entertainment district, home to many of the city\u2019s most popular restaurants, surf shops, and entertainment venues like Gravity Park, parking routinely becomes quite congested, especially during peak tourist season.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n \u201cThere is some parking pressure for sure. Some stress from people driving around looking for spaces.
