When a former Spurs player walks into any establishment, they’re probably pretty easy to spot. That might’ve been the case with the more than 7 feet tall David Robinson, who stopped by a San Antonio deli over the weekend.

No. 50 was spotted at Beacon Hill Market & Deli – a popular eatery in an area of San Antonio that’s undergoing big changes – on Sunday, November 9.

“It’s not everyday that a Spurs legend comes through to remind us of how tiny Matt and I are,” an Instagram post from the eatery reads. “Today was a special day!”

Co-owner Maray McChesney told MySA in a direct message that Robinson “was very gracious, very gentle. In fact he was the one who asked if we wanted to take the photo.” According to McChesney, the Spurs icon ordered “two cheesesteaks (one with Ricos nacho cheese – support local!) and a toasted Italian.”

Not only is “The Admiral” one of only 10 Spurs players to have their jersey retired, he’s also a minority owner of the team. The Naval Academy alum played for the Spurs for his entire 14-year NBA tenure, joining in 1989 after completing military service (hence the nickname). Robinson was crucial in helping the Spurs win their first two championships, as well as in launching the next generation of iconic San Antonio players through his mentorship of Tim Duncan.

He retired in 2003 and has since remained in Alamo City happenings. In 2001, he founded the Carver Academy, a local public charter school, and helped launch private equity firm Admiral Capitol Group (now Vero Capitol) in 2007.
