WACO, Texas \u2013 The North Texas women’s tennis team concluded competition at the ITA Texas Regional Championships on Sunday, highlighted by a quarterfinal appearance from freshman Maya Chen<\/a> and senior Carolina Laydner<\/a> in doubles action.
\n\u00a0
\nChen and Laydner were one of just two doubles teams from non-Power Four programs to reach the quarterfinals, recording three consecutive victories during the tournament.
\n\u00a0
\nThe Mean Green duo opened competition with an 8-4 victory over UT Arlington’s Maria Isabel Suarez and Tasmine Ahamout before upsetting the No. 2-seeded SMU pairing of Addison Yang Comiskey and Caroline McGinley by the same score.
\n\u00a0
\nChen and Laydner continued their run Saturday with another 8-4 victory over Rice’s No. 9-seeded Josephine Kunz and Francesca Maguina Bunikowska to advance to the quarterfinals.

\nTheir tournament run came to an end Sunday morning in a closely contested match against TCU’s No. 9-seeded Sofia Mykhailets and Cristina Ramos Sierra, falling 8-7 (7-4).

\nThe Mean Green also saw seniors Lilly Schultz<\/a> and Lou Chalard<\/a> advance to the Round of 16 as the No. 9-seeded doubles pairing. After receiving a first-round bye, the duo defeated Abilene Christian’s Victoria Correa and Alem Cote, 8-4, before falling to SMU’s No. 5-seeded Brooklyn Olson and Sophie Llewellyn, 8-7 (7-4).

\n“I’m really happy with the weekend starting from the very beginning,” head coach Amanda Stone<\/a> said. “Having five go straight into the main [singles] draw and Lilly earning her way in is a great testament to how quickly this program is improving. Toughness is a hallmark of UNT tennis, and we brought it in every match. Carolina and Maya really highlighted it all making the quarters in doubles and were points away from a semis appearance. Very proud of this team. We have big goals and they are taking the right steps to make it happen.”

\nIn singles competition, Schultz and freshman Zimora McKnight<\/a> each earned opening-round victories. Schultz defeated UTSA’s Katsiaryna Dubik, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, while McKnight picked up a straight-set victory over TCU’s Cristina Ramos Sierra, 6-3, 6-2. Both players fell in the following round.

\nIn other doubles action, fifth-year Stadfany Nformi<\/a> and McKnight opened with an 8-3 victory over UTSA’s Gabriela Felix da Silva and Katsiaryna Dubik before falling to SMU’s Allie Bittner and Natalie Stasny in the next round, 8-7 (7-2).

\nNorth Texas will return to action Oct. 22-25 at the American Conference Individual Championships in Houston.
