One of Kenya’s<\/a> more high-profile and controversial citizens happens to own a nice piece of property here in Texas. While visiting the Lone Star State recently as part of a sprawling U.S. tour, former Kenyan deputy president Rigathi Gachagua confirmed he owns a home in Dallas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Dallas is my home away from home,” Gachagua wrote in a Facebook post on Sept. 25. “I always feel at home here, and being in Texas brings me so much joy and happiness.”<\/p>\n

Accompanying the words are photos of Gachagua’s Dallas home, including one of the Kenyan politician with his wife, Dorcas. They’re standing in front of the home modeling a golf cart with the license plate “Riggy G.”<\/p>\n

“You are taking pictures like primary school kids who have gone on a tour,” wrote a commenter, translated from Swahili.<\/p>\n

In front of the home is a yard sign reading “I (love) Wamunyoro,” which refers to the Kenyan village where Gachahua lives. Gachagua, who launched Kenya’s Democracy for the Citizens Party in an effort to challenge current president William Ruto following a dramatic impeachment, has a similar sign at his Kenyan home.<\/p>\n

Church, golf and guns<\/p>\n

While in Dallas, Gachagua spoke to local Kenyans and shared his views on “illicit brew,”<\/a> or unregulated homemade spirits and alcoholic beverages. He also wore a cowboy hat, attended a church service at Victory Chapel, played a round of golf<\/a> at The Trails of Frisco and went to a shooting range.<\/p>\n

“While in Texas I have taken time to practice and sharpen my skills in weaponry and basic combat skills that I learnt in my earlier life while serving in the security sector,” he wrote. He added that his wife was also participating because “goonism is a way of life.” He’s talking about gang-related violence; “goonism” is a word of the moment in Kenya.<\/p>\n

Dramatic impeachment<\/p>\n

Gachagua has had a turbulent political career. He served as a member of the Kenyan Parliament between 2017 and ’22, then became the country’s second deputy president-Kenya’s version of a vice president-under Ruto.<\/p>\n

But two years later, Gachagua was impeached by Parliament in late 2024 on five of 11 charges, accused by fellow lawmakers of corruption and undermining the government. The impeachment came amid a falling out between Gachagua and conservative Ruto, who the BBC described<\/a> as possibly Kenya’s “most disliked” president.<\/p>\n
