The team helps residents determine whether an animal truly needs assistance, preventing unnecessary separation of healthy young wildlife from their parents.

The incredible rescue of Athena’s owlet

One of Austin Wildlife Rescue’s most memorable success stories involves Athena, a great horned owl who has nested at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for more than a decade.

Through a nest camera, wildlife enthusiasts have followed Athena’s nesting journey and watched her raise her young.

"One

One of Austin Wildlife Rescue’s most memorable success stories involves Athena, a great horned owl who has nested at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for more than a decade.

But this year, something went wrong.

Athena stopped returning to the nest, and one of her owlets sadly died. Rescuers initially feared the second owlet had also passed away until movement was spotted on the camera.

Jules received the call on a Sunday morning and immediately headed to the Wildflower Center.

When the team reached the nest, they discovered the baby owl was alive but in critical condition.

“The baby was very cold,” Jules recalled, explaining that the owlet had endured rainy weather, was severely underweight and was covered in mites.

The rescue team warmed the owlet, provided fluids and arranged veterinary care.

Within 48 hours, the outlook began to improve.

“We were just so happy. Within 48 hours, we knew we were in a good place with the baby because it was very hungry and eating.”

The owlet was then placed with Addison, an experienced foster great horned owl who has helped raise orphaned owlets for years.

Under Addison’s care, Athena’s owlet grew stronger, learned essential owl behaviors and eventually returned to the wild.

What began as a heartbreaking situation became an unforgettable rescue success story.
