He was later transferred to the Folkston ICE Processing Center in Georgia – about 1,000 miles away from his home.

“Ya’akub was leaving his apartment to go to work when agents descended on him, guns blaring, yelling at him, screaming at him,” Eric Lee, Vijandre’s attorney, told KERA.

Vijandre, who is from the Philippines, had been living in the U.S. for two decades before he was arrested for allegedly overstaying his visa. Shortly before his arrest, his DACA status had been revoked over social media posts an ICE spokesperson said were “glorifying terrorism.”

“This case is about whether opposing this administration makes you a terrorist who can be subject to executive branch detention,” Lee said. “And that’s why it’s especially important that people are aware that this man has been locked up now for exactly a year.”

Vijandre was denied all forms of immigration relief earlier this year.
