The Harris County District Attorney\u2019s Office has launched an independent investigation into Saturday\u2019s incident in which an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) vehicle struck and injured a man.<\/a><\/p>\n

In a post on social media<\/a> Monday evening, District Attorney Sean Teare announced he had launched an independent investigation, requesting any photos or videos from witnesses of the collision.<\/p>\n

Representatives from Teare\u2019s office did not immediately return a request for comment regarding the investigation.<\/p>\n

ICE identified the man as Miguel Parra-Hernandez and said he remained in ICE custody while receiving treatment at a local hospital. <\/p>\n

According to FIEL Houston, an immigrant rights advocacy group, Parra-Hernandez has undergone surgery for a broken leg, with more surgeries expected. He was struck by the ICE vehicle on Saturday morning near Highway 6 North and Clay Road during an alleged vehicle pursuit. The incident allegedly broke his ankle and right leg and injured his hip and knees.<\/p>\n

In a press conference Monday, Parra-Hernandez\u2019 attorney, Kim Bruno, said she was denied a confidential conversation with her client.<\/p>\n

Bruno said ICE agents attempted to record a conversation with her client before she was removed from the building.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have not processed him,\u201d she said. \u201cHe is in a public place, and there is no reason why I, as his attorney, could not go in and have a confidential conversation with my client.\u201d<\/p>\n

Representatives from ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In an earlier statement issued Saturday, a spokesperson for ICE claimed Parra-Hernandez ran in front of the vehicle.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs ICE officers attempted to apprehend the illegal aliens, Miguel Parra-Hernandez ran in front of an ICE vehicle and was struck,\u201d an ICE spokesperson said in a written statement. \u201cICE immediately contacted EMS and provided aid. Miguel Parra-Hernandez sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. He\u2019s in stable condition.\u201d<\/p>\n

ICE also stated Parra-Hernandez did not have permanent legal status in the United States. The organization said the collision happened during a \u201ctargeted enforcement operation in Harris County to arrest Jose Mendoza-Cervantes,\u201d the driver of the vehicle who allegedly fled the scene. <\/p>\n
