Nguyen is UTA’s first flag football coach.

In December 2025, UTA named Melinda Nguyen as the school’s first flag football head coach. Nguyen’s arrival in Arlington, although her first Division I gig, is merely the latest milestone in a lifetime around flag football.

Nguyen’s love of football started early, as she grew up in a football-playing family in Wheaton, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. At around age 9, according to local magazine Bethesda, she was offered a spot on an all-girls flag football team.

“People and boys told me that I couldn’t play,” Nguyen said. “That drew me to wanting to play because I like proving people wrong.”

She continued playing flag football until age 14, when the youth leagues ended. The boys were able to tackle the sport, but Nguyen had to settle for a switch to cross-country.

That was, until the Vietnamese Student Association at the University of Maryland in College Park came knocking. They had a women’s flag football team and wanted Nguyen to join.

She started playing for the team, eventually attending the university, where a second organization, the Filipino Cultural Association, recruited her as a freshman.

Nguyen played quarterback for the two clubs, leading the teams to a combined nine championships in six years. She credits her playing success to her experience.

“I’d been playing for a very long time, and back then, even now, it’s really rare to find players who have played since they were in elementary school,” Nguyen said. “Most of the players that we played against in college or with in college were introduced to the sport really late.”

Her connection to the clubs did not fade with graduation. After earning her bachelor’s degree in English language and literature, Nguyen traded her flag belt for a whistle, becoming the teams’ coach.

Eventually, Nguyen took a part-time coaching role with a professional flag football team, the DMV Diamonds, who played in the Women’s Flag Football Network.

At the same time as her stint with the Diamonds, Nguyen had a full-time job as a first grade teacher at a nearby elementary school. She said the role of a grade school instructor isn’t too different from that on the sidelines.

“I would use a lot of my first-grade experience with my players, and I still do, actually, as team bonding or fun events,” Nguyen said. “Competition is competition at any level, and if you can find ways to turn that competition into football-based or first-grade-based, then ultimately my whole belief is if they’re having fun, then they’re engaged.”

In 2022, after teaching through the COVID-19 era, Nguyen realized which of her jobs she wanted to do full-time. She packed her bags from the bustling metro area where she grew up for the amber waves of grain in Salina, Kansas, taking the Kansas Wesleyan University flag football head coaching job.

“I realized I have a lot of stuff to put on my resume in terms of football, so then I started Googling, went to Indeed, found the job, and I was like, ‘I’m just going to apply, and if nothing else, I get to practice my interview skills,’” Nguyen said. “Flew out there, ended up loving it, and then moved out there like two weeks later.”

The program was only in its third year of existence when Nguyen stepped onto campus, and over the next three years, the Coyotes went a combined 49-17, as she led the team to its first appearance in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Flag Football Finals A Bracket in 2025.

Later that calendar year, Nguyen got an opportunity to coach the Filipino national women’s flag football team in the International Federation of American Football Asia-Oceania flag football continental championships in Ningbo, China.

A flag football player runs during practice Oct. 5 at Maverick Stadium. UTA was the fifth Division I university to create a women’s flag football program.

Nguyen accepted the role, and the team, nicknamed the Agila Pilipinas, went 4-0 in its group before losing to China in the semifinals and finishing fourth.

At the end of 2025, for yet another moment in Nguyen’s life, another flag football team was requesting her services. This time, though, the call came from a college that hadn’t played a snap of any sort of football since 1985: The University of Texas at Arlington.

UTA announced in May 2025 that the school was creating a flag football team, one of the first in a wave of Division I schools to introduce the sport to their athletic departments. The Mavericks had their perks, namely their geographic location at the heart of the nation’s fourth-largest metro area, and a 12,000-seat stadium for flag football to call its own.

Nguyen said yes, leaving the success she had installed in the Sunflower State to head south, to a region where the male version of the sport was already a devout religion.

The team spent the spring after Nguyen’s hire acquiring more talent, for both the sidelines and the playing field. The Mavericks now have a coaching staff and a roster, no longer a concept or an idea, but a true team.

UTA began practice this fall under Nguyen’s watchful eye, with the inaugural players seeming to love the coach. Freshman wide receiver Madison Schleyer was among the second wave of UTA flag football signees, hailing from Ashburn, Virginia, just a 33-mile drive from where Nguyen grew up.

“She just understands everything,” Schleyer said. “She understands that this is a mental game, that your mind can take you further than your body knows, and she also just pushes us to be our best.”

Junior middle linebacker Ava Duerr, meanwhile, followed Nguyen from Kansas to Arlington. Last year, she led Kansas Wesleyan in tackles, making 98 total across 18 games.

“She’s an incredible head coach,” Duerr said. “She is very good at what she does. She listens to her players and does a really good job adapting to difficulties.”

For the fall, the team’s goal is to figure itself out, including what works, what can be worked on and how they work together.

Come the spring, the jerseys will come on, the flag belts will be buckled and UTA football will return from its 40-year hiatus in a fashion no one in 1985 could have expected.

“When you think of flag football, you think of little kids playing, or powder-puff, almost like a joke, but when people actually learn and watch flag football, it is extremely exciting,” Nguyen said. “If you love tackle football, you’re going to fall in love with flag football.”

@TyRoland06

sports-editor.shorthorn@uta.edu

Flag football head coach Melinda Nguyen blows her whistle during practice Oct. 5 at Maverick Stadium.
