{"id":465300,"date":"2026-10-14T01:22:28","date_gmt":"2026-10-14T01:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/465300\/"},"modified":"2026-10-14T01:22:28","modified_gmt":"2026-10-14T01:22:28","slug":"pilot-identified-in-fatal-crash-near-hicks-airfield-in-fort-worth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/465300\/","title":{"rendered":"Pilot identified in fatal crash near Hicks Airfield in Fort Worth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The pilot killed in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/public-safety\/article\/hicks-airfield-crash-ntsb-engine-issues-22468075.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">single-plane crash<\/a> last week in Fort Worth has been identified as 67-year-old John Unangst.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Video filmed by a witness the morning of Oct. 7 showed the plane in flames in a patch of grass near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/article\/single-engine-plane-crashes-fort-worth-near-hicks-22466846.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hicks Airfield<\/a>. Unangst, the plane&#8217;s sole occupant, died at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The Tarrant County Medical Examiner&#8217;s Office did not indicate the cause of death.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary information indicated the airplane, a low-wing Lancair IV-P, had engine issues and turned back toward Hicks Airfield before crashing.<\/p>\n<p>The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash and is expected to release more details\u00a0in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Hicks Airfield has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/airlines\/article\/fort-worth-hicks-airfield-crash-no-control-tower-22467011.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no air traffic control tower<\/a>, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, but it is common for smaller airports to operate without towers.<\/p>\n<p>This was the second fatal aviation accident near Hicks Airfield in less than a year.
