More than a decade later, the No. 20 Cougars welcome No. 18 Oklahoma State for a matchup with potentially significant Big 12 title implications.

Both teams enter on a roll. Houston has won three consecutive games by double-digits, capping the stretch with arguably its most complete performance since joining the Big 12 in a dominant victory at Kansas State last Saturday. Oklahoma State brings a four-game winning streak to Houston, highlighted by a Week 2 victory over Oregon.

The stakes are clear, and the calls to pack TDECU Stadium continue to grow louder. With two ranked teams colliding in primetime, Houston has an opportunity to create its most electric home atmosphere since joining the Big 12 — and both teams have the opportunity to make a statement in front of a national audience.

Oklahoma State Cowboys outlook

<img alt="STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA - OCTOBER 10: Quarterback Drew Mestemaker #17 of the Oklahoma State Cowboys throws a pass before a game against the UCF Knights at Boone Pickens Stadium on October 10, 2026 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Cowboys trailed West Virginia at halftime in Week 4 and were tied with UCF at the break in Week 6. Both games, however, turned into decisive double-digit victories after Oklahoma State asserted its dominance on both sides of the ball in the second half.

The Cowboys have emerged as one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the country. Head coach Eric Morris directed the No. 1 offense last season at North Texas, and with several Mean Green standouts now in Stillwater, Oklahoma State ranks sixth nationally in offensive production. Quarterback Drew Mestemaker continues to deliver, high-quality, NFL-caliber throws on a weekly basis, and the 2027 draft prospect has thrown for at least 300 yards and multiple touchdowns in each of Oklahoma State’s four consecutive wins.

Mestemaker’s 315 passing yards per game rank third nationally, and he’s paired that production with incredible efficiency, completing 67.5 percent of attempts. He also benefits from one of the deepest receiving corps in the country. Wyatt Young, who finished third in the FBS in receiving yards last season, currently ranks 15th in the category with 92.4 yards per game. Justin Bowick has been a nightmare matchup for defenders, using his 6’5” frame to haul in 26 receptions and five touchdowns. Miles Coleman and Terrence Lewis provide additional firepower for an offense averaging 38.2 points per game.

Even though Morris is known for his air raid roots, Oklahoma State can impose its will on the ground. Caleb Hawkins led the FBS in rushing touchdowns a season ago, and although he has scored just twice since arriving in Stillwater, he remains shredding defenses with over 100 rushing yards per game. Hawkins has benefited from an offensive line that has made considerable strides since falling victim to a Week 1 upset at Tulsa. Those improvements are not only limited to run blocking — the Cowboys have surrendered just two sacks during its four-game winning streak.

Defensively, the Cowboys have had their share of shaky stretches, particularly in the first halves against West Virginia and UCF. But the unit has consistently tightened up as games progress. Oklahoma State has outscored every opponent in the second half during its current winning streak.

The Cowboys rank 81st nationally in run defense but 32nd in passing yards allowed per game. The unit’s unquestioned leader is North Texas transfer outside linebacker Ethan Wesloski, who is coming off his third Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor. Wesloski has recorded 17 tackles in back-to-back weeks, and he checks in at second in the conference with 53 total stops. Inside linebacker Tate Romney has complemented him well, generating five tackles for loss as another disruptive presence against the run.

The secondary is led by cornerback LaDainian Fields, who owns an interception and three pass breakups this season. Oklahoma State needs more takeaways from its defensive backs, however, as the Cowboys enter this matchup with a minus-3 turnover margin. There were encouraging signs last week against UCF, when Oklahoma State won the turnover battle 2-1, including a scoop-and-score touchdown by strong safety Evan Jackson, who made a heads-up play on a backward lateral for the team’s first defensive touchdown under first-year coordinator Skyler Cassity.

<img alt="MANHATTAN, KS - OCTOBER 10: Quarterback Conner Weigman #1 of the Houston Cougars calls out a play from the line of scrimmage against the Kansas State Wildcats in the second half at Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium on October 10, 2026 in Manhattan, Kansas. The Cougars fell two points short of upsetting Texas Tech in Week 3 but have otherwise dominated their competition. All five Houston victories have come by double digits, a stark contrast to last season, when the Cougars went 6-1 in one-score games on their way to 10 wins.

The road trip to Kansas State represented the most complete performance of the Willie Fritz era. Houston built a lead as large as 35-9 by the third quarter, overpowering the Wildcats on both sides of the ball. The performance began with a productive opening drive and that offensive firepower sustained through the majority of the game.

The Cougars’ greatest leap from 2025 to 2026 can be seen on offense, where the unit ranks 12th nationally in yards per game and 15th with 40.0 points per game. Offensive coordinator Slade Nagle has cultivated an impressive balance between the run and pass. Houston ranks 14th in rushing yards per game and averages 5.5 yards per carry. Through the air, the Cougars are completing more than 67 percent of passes, delivering 17 touchdown passes compared to just one interception.

Quarterback Conner Weigman is at the center of that production. The senior has recorded two outings with three touchdown passes and zero interceptions, along with two additional games featuring four touchdown strikes without a pick. He ranks ninth nationally in touchdown passes, and his last interception transpired in Week 1. Weigman has also been a dangerous threat with his mobility, scoring six rushing touchdowns across six games. Although he was a frequent 100-yard rusher last year, his rushing attempts have been more limited this year. The exceptions were against Texas Tech and UCF — the only two opponents Houston trailed in the second half.

One reason Houston isn’t running Weigman as much is it doesn’t have to. Re’Shaun Sanford II and Makhi Hughes have thrived in the backfield with 404 and 387 rushing yards, respectively. The offensive line deserves plenty of credit for their production. The line has also kept Weigman upright in pass protection, surrendering just five sacks through six games.

Houston enters this matchup with the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week in Patrick Overmyer. The UTSA transfer is now etched into the history books after tying the FBS record for most touchdown receptions by a tight end in a single game with four. But Overmyer is more than just a red zone specialist; he is quite explosive for the position, recording a 30-yard reception in eight of his last 12 outings.

His emergence has taken the load off 2025 First Team All-Big 12 receiver Amare Thomas, who has caught just six passes over the past two weeks. Thomas remains Houston’s top receiving option, but his supporting cast has grown tremendously. Trent Walker has emerged as a sure set of hands on third downs for the nation’s No. 1 third down offense, while Koby Young has erupted onto the scene as a reliable deep threat with 21.6 yards per reception.

Defensively, Houston has been particularly stout against the run. The Cougars rank fourth nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 74.0 yards per game. That statistic is not exactly sack-driven, either, as Houston is a middle-of-the-pack team when it comes to producing sacks, managing 12 through six matchups. Defensive tackle Khalil Laufau has been the head of the snake of the run defense, disrupting offensive lines to generate six tackles for loss.

The most encouraging development from the Kansas State game came in the secondary. The Cougars’ passing defense regularly struggled during the first five weeks, and the group currently ranks 118th in the FBS in yards allowed. But Kansas State managed just 182 passing yards on 30 attempts as safeties Kentrell Webb, Jordan Allen, and Javion White were stellar in coverage. Webb leads the unit with 34 tackles, while Allen owns team-highs in interceptions (2) and pass breakups (6).

This could be one of the season’s most compelling quarterback matchups. Oklahoma State’s Drew Mestemaker ranks third nationally in passing yards per game, while Houston’s Conner Weigman has produced 21 total touchdowns with remarkable efficiency.

Both offenses are capable of putting up points, but they approach the game differently. Houston uses its ground game to open up opportunities through the air, while Oklahoma State typically leans on its passing attack to create space for Caleb Hawkins and the rushing attack. Neither approach has been met with significant resistance.

Expect a high-scoring contest featuring plenty of explosive plays. The Cowboys have the offensive firepower to keep pace, but Houston’s run defense and recent improvement in the secondary could prove decisive.

In a game likely to come down to the wire, Houston’s defensive versatility could prove to be an advantage. The Cougars make the most of an electrifying TDECU Stadium crowd, clinch bowl eligibility, and stamp a massive win for their Big 12 title stakes.

Prediction: Houston 38, Oklahoma State 37

Time and date: Saturday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. ETNetwork: FOXLocation: TDECU Stadium — Houston, TXSpread: Houston (-4.5)Over/under:…

[7
315,56,58,57,544
post-465730","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-houston","tag-big-12","tag-houston","tag-houston-headlines","tag-houston-news","tag-oklahoma-state
["GET
