\n\tIt\u2019s impossible to listen to the year\u2019s biggest charting song, Ella Langley\u2019s \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas,\u201d<\/a> without hearing shades of traditional country songs that came before it. That includes Midland\u2019s 2017 debut <\/a>single, \u201cDrinkin\u2019 Problem.\u201d The band themselves tell Rolling Stone\u2019s Nashville Now that Langley\u2019s success helps illuminate the traditional country music they were making during a time when bro country was still king.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c\u2018Choosin\u2019 Texas\u2019 coming out might be the best thing to ever happen to Midland<\/a>,\u201d the trio\u2019s singer Mark Wystrach says, seated next to bassist Cameron Duddy and guitarist Jess Carson. \u201cIt shined a light on the music that we\u2019ve been playing, music that we set out to play.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Texas group\u2019s new album Stages builds on the sounds they were working in on their first album On the Rocks. But Wystrach says they couldn\u2019t have made their latest without going through certain experiences. \u201cStages is the album we would have made 12 years ago if we had the chops\u2026 We evolved so much as musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd writers,\u201d Duddy adds. \u201cThe songs that came to us [for Stages] were not there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou gotta go and live life,\u201d Wystrach says. \u201cGet a bunch of scars, some Ws, some Ls, fuck up and course correct.\u201d<\/p>\n
