<\/p>\nA Plano couple will never forget the birth of their third child. The dad hand-delivered his baby boy after his wife’s labor took a sharp turn before they could make it to the hospital.<\/p>\n
NBC 5 caught up with the Contreras family to share their story.<\/p>\n
Emma Contreras thought she had a pretty good sense of what being in active labor feels like, until a few days ago. <\/p>\n
“It just happened so fast, so intensely,” Emma said.<\/p>\n
Her husband Diego was just as surprised.<\/p>\n
“Even the doula thought that she had time, and then Emma called the doula a second time, and that’s when the doula realized there was something different in her voice,” Diego said.<\/p>\n
Emma could barely sit in the car due to involuntary pushes as her husband rushed her to the hospital. The couple said they were about five minutes away when they got trapped in traffic.<\/p>\n
“I took a different route than usual because I wanted to park right in front of the ER and we got stuck at a red light,” Diego said. “And it would not turn green; her dad started calling, and she very grumpily was like, ‘Hang up on him, hit decline’,” Diego said.<\/p>\n
Diego told NBC 5 he went inside thinking he had plenty of time to get his wife a wheelchair and some help, but baby Beni had other plans.<\/p>\n
“I think she had her hand on her hip, and clearly she was in agony,” Diego said. “She said, ‘He’s here.’ And so, I pulled her pants down, and I saw Beni, the top of his head. He was crowning, I think is the term. And just with my instincts, I squatted in front of her.”<\/p>\n
Emma gave birth standing up, then snapped a photo moments after Diego caught their baby in his hands.<\/p>\n

“The view was amazing to me to see my husband holding my baby. And I had my phone in hand, so I thought, I have to,” Emma said.<\/p>\n
“The doula asked, ‘What’s your delivery plan?’ And Emma had said that she hopes that Diego’s more involved,” Diego said.<\/p>\n
“Yeah, we didn’t mean it like this, but I was really proud of him,” Emma said. “Just like total euphoria and amazement, honestly.”<\/p>\n
The Contreras family said soon after the birth, medical staff rushed out to help them.
