The first thing you should do is stay up to date on weather alerts in your area.

This can be done either by listening to your local radio or TV stations or by going to the National Weather Service website and looking at the live radar indicating where severe weather alerts are passing through. You know the ones, you have your flash flood warning, tornado warnings, and even icy road conditions once we get to that time of year.

Preparing your home for worst-case scenarios is the next crucial step. I’m not saying that you need to pack your doomsday shelter, but making sure you and your family can hunker down in the house for at least 24 hours is a must.

This means making sure your portable chargers are filled, flashlights are readily available, and your fridge and freezer stay shut just in case the power goes out. Oh, and you should always gather in either a basement or the centermost room in the house. Basically, as far away from the windows and exterior walls as you can.

Lubbock doesn’t see a lot of action when compared to other counties in Tornado Alley, but we do get more than most of the rest of the state, that’s for sure.

Did You Know: Lubbock Tornadoes Edition?

Did you know that Lubbock averages 2.2 tornadoes each year? Well, if you didn’t, then maybe you have heard of these other facts from tornadopath.com:

Most tornadoes pass through around 4 p.m.April is the most popular month of Lubbock tornadoesThe most tornadoes in one year for Lubbock was eight in 2007There were four tornadoes all on April 16, 2009—the most recorded in one day

Obviously, we can’t forget the F5 tornado that swept through the Hub City on May 11, 1970. This massive force of nature was responsible for 26 fatalities and an estimated $250 million in damages.

This is why we all need to remember our safety precautions and to never underestimate severe weather events here in Lubbock, especially when it comes to tornadoes.

Where to Find Lubbock’s Coziest & Most Comforting Cold-Weather Eats

Gallery Credit: Renee Raven

Inside Nightmare on 19th Street: A Look at Lubbock’s Terrifying Halloween Attraction

This is the ONE haunted theme park in Texas that you need to check out each Halloween

Gallery Credit: Chaz

Fondest Memories Of Lubbock

Gallery Credit: Nessmania

It’s never too late to learn how Lubbockites should prepare for tornadoes and extreme weather, especially given the…

[16
168,170,169,2630
post-466266","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-lubbock","tag-lubbock","tag-lubbock-headlines","tag-lubbock-news","tag-state-news
["GET
