SAN ANTONIO \u2013 UTSA Athletics has officially opened its Basketball & Volleyball Training Center, providing the Roadrunners\u2019 men\u2019s basketball, women\u2019s basketball and volleyball programs with a dedicated practice facility for the first time.<\/p>\n
For years, coaches used the planned building as a key recruiting tool. Now, the athletes who heard those pitches are finally training inside it.<\/p>\n
\u201cCoach Karen Aston has been talking to us about this facility since I was in high school being recruited,\u201d said senior women\u2019s basketball forward Idara Udo. \u201cNow that it\u2019s finally here, it\u2019s a dream come true.\u201d<\/p>\n
The center features two full-sized NCAA practice courts, locker rooms, team lounges, a weight room, an athletic training area with hydrotherapy and hyperbaric chambers, meeting rooms and coaches\u2019 offices. It also includes a podcast studio and content center to help athletes create content and build their personal brands in the NIL era.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was blown away, first of all, by how beautiful it is,\u201d Aston said. \u201cThat was a selling point to Idara and every other basketball player that we\u2019ve recruited \u2014 that you\u2019re going to have a new practice facility, you\u2019re going to have something really great to call your own.\u201d<\/p>\n
For athletes who have been with the program for several years, the opening holds special significance.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing a super senior, I\u2019ve been here since day one,\u201d said redshirt senior guard Maya Linton. \u201cSeeing it build and the process of all this coming together is just amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis allows us to be free and be flexible,\u201d said UTSA volleyball senior middle blocker Ledisi Kpea. \u201cHaving a facility that\u2019s just dedicated to men\u2019s and women\u2019s basketball and volleyball.\u201d<\/p>\n
That flexibility ranks among the biggest changes. The three programs will no longer need to coordinate practice times around one another at the Convocation Center.<\/p>\n
For UTSA\u2019s athletes and coaches, the facility\u2019s greatest impact is clear: It gives them their own space to train, recover, meet and grow without sharing schedules with other teams.<\/p>\n
